Dear AT,
Last year at a neighbor's condo I saw this awesome hanging coat rack. I can't recall the details at this point, but I believe it was made of either steel cable or thick clear tubing, suspended from the ceiling. Interspersed over the length of the cable were curved metal hooks. Empty, it appeared to be a simple mobile, but our host told us it was actually a coat rack. We'd been looking for one for our very small entrance area, and when I asked him who it was by, it seemed as if he didn't want me to know and avoided answering. I figured he didn't want anyone else to have the same rack, so I let it go.

Now our current rack from CB2 is falling apart after only a year, and I think it takes up too much space anyway, so I'm on a hunt to find this one. I saw one by inno of Finland, the "Oka A" hanging coat rack (pictured above), and while it's nice, I preferred the other one I saw. I've attached a really poor rendition of the one I'm trying to find. If anyone has any idea of where I can find the cable and metal hook coat rack I described, or if they can offer suggestions for a similar one, I'd really appreciate it! A wall hanging one won't work as we don't have much wallspace, and what we do have is concrete.
Thanks,
Veronika
Dear Veronika,
Too bad your friend wouldn't share his resources with you, and thankfully AT readers are ALL ABOUT sharing their resources. We have seen very few ceiling-hung coat racks (and we've been scouring the web looking), so readers, we need you on this one. Good luck, Veronika!
how about a length of chain hung from a hook in the ceiling with a series of S hooks in the links at different heights. Your choice on the size and finish.
Then try and convince your friends it's just for coats. :-)
Here's an idea...
Rather than simply making the top of a standard coat rack why not find a junky chandelier (one with lightbulb flames, or candle holders) at a yard sale/junk shop/eBay and use that as your hanging coat rack. I could see it painted a bright shiny color that when not being used (summertime) would double as a nice pieve of decoration...
Or how about some type of grappling hook ( http://cgi.ebay.com/Heavy-duty-Steel-farm-pulley-with-grappling-hook_W0QQitemZ150056305044QQihZ005QQcategoryZ104043QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem ) or boat anchor... something with a bit of charm would be swell...
Making one would be my idea too. I would say use a square piece of wood, maybe 2x2 and 6"long, drill a hole through the center length so you have a place to run a cable through, then find some modern hooks you like and attach to the face of the wood. You could attach them all at the same height or at varied points on each side of the wood square.
Make. One.
Thanks for the ideas! Usually I'm all about being crafty and making my own stuff if I can't find what I'm looking for, but I was so enamored of the one I saw at my neighbor's. Fie on him for not sharing.
However, these are some great ideas you've given me. I like them all and will sketch them out and see what my boyfriend thinks. He also mentioned making our own. I'm fond of Julian's fancy junky chandelier suggestion, but I'm sure my BF will declare it "too girly" (as he often declares my decorating ideas). Courtney and Ron's ideas are very do-able too. I'm excited about my next project!
Hey!
