Good Questions: Where Can I Find This Fabric?

9-3-08goodquestion.jpg

Kate sent us a good question: Does anyone know where I can find this fabric? Or something similar? I’m looking to recover some craigslist chairs and love the color and print! Help!

Kate, that sofa is from Lena Corwin's house. (You can see a full tour of her place from AT here.) The fabric is Hable Construction's "bead" pattern in green, which they sell by yard to the trade only. However, Maine Cottage has an almost-identical fabric called Hotty Dotty which they sell online for $15/yard. Good luck with your upholstery job!

Other suggestions for Kate?

Contact hable and ask them how to go about getting a sample and where a non-design professional can purchase this fabric.

If you're willing to go oversize with the dots, Marimekko's Piinet Kivet print looks almost identical to this, but with 3.5" dots.

Or go really bold and get fabric from the Kivet line, which has 11.5" dots.

If I were you, I'd get the original Hable fabric for your chairs, but make some curtains out of one of the Kivet prints to hang in the same room.

Hable Construction has also partnered with Pottery Barn Kids -- you can purchase chairs already covered in this pattern there... Not sure about pillows/other furniture.

There is a service I use called LA Design Concepts that allows you to buy "To Trade Only" items for 20% above net (trade price). They might be able to help you get the fabric at a good price.

Just FYI. Hable Construction fabrics are VERY expensive. So a 20% above net price might be outlandish. Even with my "Trade Only" discount, depending on the pattern, fabric costs an upwards of 70$ a yard and there is a 3 yard minimum, on many (if not all) patterns.

I would highly recommend Maine Cottage's fabric line(s). I have a 1950s chair that I wanted to recover in Hable, but after pricing it out with an interior designer, the cost was astronomical.

Instead, I bought fabric from Maine Cottage's "Hotty Dotty" line, and would have to say that it's comparable in quality and the colors are amazing. I own a couple of small pieces from Hable, and although I think their fabric is slightly weightier, it's a pretty even comparison.
