Good Questions: Where to Go for Crown Moulding?

021607moulding.jpg

Hi AT Chicago,

I am considering putting up some crown moulding in our master bedroom and our baby's room. I have no idea where to start. We will probably hire someone to put it up, but the initial question is where can we go to purchase the crown moulding? We are not looking for anything too complicated or fancy. Any ideas on where to purchase would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Pam

Dear Pam,

The first thing to pop up in our search was Moulding & Millwork, which seems to have a large presence nationwide (so we're hoping someone might have a firsthand review). This family-owned company was established in 1926, and "has become one of the largest suppliers of wood mouldings in North America, including pine, oak, hemlock, mahogany, maple, cedar and MDF mouldings."

Locally, they're at:
777 Chase Ave; Elk Grove Village, IL 60007 (t. 847.640.6500)

Any other suggestions?

Hi Pam,
Unless you already own a Compound Miter Saw, AND are very experienced with it- I would recc. saving the sawdust and call a Cabinetmake/Carpenter/etc. That way, if you want a Custom Stain, paint finish etc...it can be applied prior.
I'd be more than happy to reccd. a fellow- or put a post on Craigslist

Pam-
just came across this over at decor8...ceiling medallions. Supplement (or substitution?) for full on moulding?

good luck, let us know what you decide!

Go to Wood World on Elston. They have eight zillion kinds of molding there in all sorts of different woods. They're a little flaky, but they're generally very nice and competitive with the big boxes on price for what I think is a nicer product.

You could ask the installer to source it for you and save yourself the bother.
