Rachel sent in an email: Hi AT! I've been looking for a way to get my books off of my desk (as you can see in the picture) in order to clear off more surfaces, and therefore give some of the clutter under the desk a more logical home. Today at IKEA I found a shelf that I really like, the KIRP wall shelf (shown below the jump). The store display had the shelf placed more horizontally, and less like a check-mark. Anyway, I'm wondering where to place the shelf...

my vote: hang it on the wall on the right above the drawers.

I would suggest getting a wall shelf like the Ikea Lack shelf either a small one on the left hand side or the longer one. It would create a kind of hatch space. The Kirp looks more like a cd/dvd shelf.

Unless the lack is secured to studs its not sturdy enough for books, nor is the Kirp. I recommend you use a Varde wall shelf, if it fits. Its sturdy, and you could use the grom accessories to get more things off the desk, and it would go well with the chair.

Move the inspiration board to the left and center if over the desk, then hang your new shelf just above the last "step" in your board.

WHAT ABOout the umbra invisible shelf? I could see 1 or even 2 of them fitting in nicely around your inspiration board

I'd wrap the shelf along all three walls on a cleat. Smart and snappy!

on the right side wall. place it so that it is right above in height where your inspiration board ends.

I vote for the right side too- above the drawers.

Another vote for on the right above the white cabinet. I'm not sure this is the right shelf though - I'd lean towards the invisible shelves as well.

I like the idea of it being on the left wall personally. Use the shelf's built in bookend on the oneside & the wall would be the bookend on the other side - although I wouldn't butt it straight up to the wall.
I do agree tho- that shelf doesn't look strong enough to hold many books. eek. be careful!

It doesn't look like it would hold as many books as you would want to put on it, so maybe getting a second one might be an option to consider.
Anyways, I would like it above the desk.

I'm liking the invisible shelf idea, too. Move the inspiration board to the left and hang it above the white cabinet--which is very cute, by the way.

This is not at all about what you asked about, but I can't help myself:
Get another cabinet, like the one you have to the right, and put it in the left corner. Take the legs off the desk and let it rest on the cabinets. (Or get another desktop that spans the entire space). That will create a clean, symmetric look.
The shelf can go almost anywhere. I don't think it'll look odd at the left wall with the "open" end out. But I guess I'd prefer to have it in the middle and put the top half of the board in line with the lower half (symmetry again).

I second the Umbra invisible shelf! I think it would be more appropriate for your space.

Don't listen to these other people, the KIRP is plenty strong enough for the books you have there on your desk. I have several of these on a wall and each as at least that many books in it. The trick is to hang it like a check mark (as in the picture) rather than horizontal. I put up all of mine with the brackets in a perfect vertical V. Keep in mind you don't want to fill it up to the end, that won't really work it will start to flex.
I would put it to the left above your calender partly for aesthetics but also because you are more likely to find the studs in the correct place on that side rather than on the other. The wall to the right looks like a short wall so it likely only has one additional stud near the middle (in addition to those at the corners) You won't be able to mount the shelf close enough to the corner to use those and if you mount it in the middle it will over hang the edge. However on the left side you could mount it on the 2nd stud from the back wall at around 36" and be in good shape. If the framing started by counting from the other direction you will have a stud somewhere less than 36" from the back wall so it might pay to go to the 3rd stud out from the wall. Regardless make sure one screw goes into the stud. I would recommend the top hole on the long side. Then use good wall anchors for the others. Don't use the plastic kind, you can get metal ones that are flat, they hammer into place and then spread on the back side when you set the screw.
One artistic tip I can pass on (what I did) is find an old square(ish) picture frame and hang it around the bottom of the shelf like a box that is being checked. You have to notch out the one side the frame where the long side of the shelf is so that everything sits flush, but it looks kind of cool. You could also create the box with just paint or tape or something like that.
