Good Questions: Wood Types for This Living Room?

Dear AT,

I have a charcoal/brown (taupe chenille) apartment sofa which I love
but cannot decide what tone of wood furniture to match it with.

I currently have matched it with a light cherry low coffee table,
which is actually solid with cool storage, but the veneer is peeling off. I also have a whole bunch of IKEA side tables (shamefully...) and
CD shelves which are in similar beechwood finish (discontinued...).
I also placed an ivory loveseat to balance it off but I am not sure
if this is working right.

I plan to upgrade my furniture a bit as I relocate this summer,
and so far the sofa will be staying. I am thinking about getting
a matching coffee table & a side table OR a coffee table & a sideboard. Ideally, a Knoll credenza would be perfect, but the West Elm modern storage media stand (below) in acorn finish would be an okay substitute...or not?

I always see light sofas matched with wenge/chocolate or dark wood
furniture in catalogues, but rarely vice versa. So please help me with some ideas!!!

Thank you!

One very simple thing that may help balance the brown couch with the white one is to switch your throw pillows... have the white pillows on the brown couch and vice-versa. Don't be afraid to mix those up with some brown and white on each couch (looks a little boring right now).

If you are keeping the charcoal sofa I'd reccommend wood without red undertones like walnut or maple. Cherry and beech are too orange/red and warm to go with such a cool colored sofa.

I personally think the wenge look is on it's way out, but does look very sophisticated when mixed with light fabrics-the light woods look IKEA to me, even if all the pieces aren't so I would recomend Walnut!! It is medium toned but has a prominent grain that cann allow you to mix in slightly lighter and slightly darker tones,it's not too red ( actually a nice grey undertone) and there's alot of new pieces available in walnut, as well as the mid mod classics so you can mix up styles a bit!!
I personally have about four types of wood in my main space but this can be trickier to do well ( like mixing different print fabrics) but my floor is a med tone with lights and darks so I picked up some lighter tones (teak) and some darker tones (Dark walnut and mahogany)this is balanced with grey walls and upholstery to keep it from reading too warm overall!!

Thanks mabaker for the tip on mixing up the pillows
so that white ones pop on dark sofa and blue ones
accent white sofa. Sadly, that IKEA sofa was very
comfortable and washable, but I have to get rid of it
since we are moving to a smaller rental for the time being.
I hope to get a white recliner or a comfy chair to replace
the white sofa and still balance out the dark ones.

LaDonnaNichole & BB - both confirmed that I am headed
in the right direction. As far as wood tones go, I actually
was thinking about walnut or teak...maple or white would
also be good candidates to brighten up small space and
withstand time and trend. Thank you so much!!!

I am just wondering whether it's hard to refinish or
change the light cherry veneer on the coffee table/bar?
It's an italian-made solid piece and I hate to let it go...

With no background in art or whatsoever, AT is such a
great resource to learn and visualize. Thanks for all the
insights and keep it going!

Thank you Heather for posting my questions!
