Paint Color for Bathroom Window and Door Frame?

102808flowers3.jpgMuch to the confusion of some friends, family (and online strangers!), we are keeping the black and white floral vintage wallpaper in master bathroom. That is, we're keeping it until we hate it or until it starts falling down, whichever comes first. What we are eager for is a splash of color in the all b&w bathroom. We're in the process of stripping old white paint layers from the window and door frames, and are stuck on color suggestions. Re-paint the frames black? white? or go for a bright color?

102808shelf.jpgOne option is a yellow (actually a rich, mustard yellow in person) similar to this jar.

We'd love to hear your thoughts....

I really like that wallpaper. (Sorry, no help.) (I even like it with the white paint.)

Black would be cool.

IMO - The yellow jar looks out of place, and so would any other color in that room.

What's wrong with the existing white?

that wallpaper looks great. and, I second, what's wrong with the existing white? you already have a bold pattern, so the addition of a bold color is going to be overwhelming.

Well for heaven's sake, it's a B&W bath. Stay with white frames, pick your favorite bright color and buy towels and rugs in that. Bright red or granny apple green jump to mind. For sophisticated elegance, rich gray would be nice. With a palette of black and white, you're free to change the colors anytime with linens, and it will always be beautiful.

I think some sort of aqua blue would be gorgeous. then you can accent with that fun mustard color (ps. love your jar) Behr makes a beautiful color called "rain washed" that my boyfriend and I love in our bathroom. best of luck!

mmm, i'd do gray. i also love your yellow jar, which would look awesome in a black/gray/white bathroom. if anything, go with a super pale color so it won't be too much of an eyepopping commitment. like really pale lavender or something!

I was thinking painting the trim a glossy pure white, but paint one of those little ridges in the trim a glossy apple green. I think that would look really cool and call attention to the architecture and give your bathroom a nice modern bright pop of color.

I love the wallpaper, too. Your bathroom looks very elegant with the two colors you have there, so I would mainly suggest keeping the white or using black.

I do also like the suggestion of the yellow and green, though I think you would have to work them into the color scheme more than having just a doorframe and jar in the bright color. Otherwise it will look out of place and more like an afterthought.

A smoky blue might also look very nice! Blah, I shouldn't be throwing more options at you. :) Sorry!

Love the wallpaper... I think a nice robins-egg blue would look amazing.

Does the mustard yellow match the paint showing on the outside of the bathroom door? Would this be continuing a color theme from the rest of the house? That would work well.

White, but a white that matches the aged white of the tile.

Painted molding always looks to me like college housing or a lazy landlord.

Get your color other ways.

But a black and white bathroom is classic. Get your color from the leaves of a Casablanca Lilly and call it a day.

I like it with the white, and I think black would be gorgeous, but if you're looking for a pop of color I would go with a glossy red.

I would also bring out the color somewhere else in the bathroom (little lacquer boxes, small vase?) unless you can see a decent portion of the window frame, otherwise it's still a B&W bathroom once you walk through the doorway.

Paint the trim glossy black - and use bright solid towels for a pop of color. Get mustard ones to match your jar!

I like the white as well. Your bathroom looks sunny. How about adding pops of yellow and green in the form of potted flowers?

i love the wall paper and pale painted trim. Add a bunch of dark blue to make it moodier if you want.

Wow! I'm trying to decide what I'm going to do for my yellow/black bathroom and I LOVE this. My ceiling will be black, the wallpaper on the ceiling is a little much for me.

I'd keep white. Just think of all the work you are going through stripping the paint...you'd get to redo it again before you'd like to if you picked some trendy color for the trim. Stick with fun accessories, art, etc, for the color. I like the paper, and the sweet tile!

my first instinct was green, kind of like the fonts in this post, (something between pear green and sage) but I think the mustard yellow could work well too. as long as it's not too yellow... (and ceramic-tile blue would be my 3rd choice)
and don't listen to all those B/W fans above, it's a matter of taste and you wrote a question in because you feel like adding some color, right?

Let me ask this then: how are you going to feel about a trendy "POP" of color if someone else comes up with the plan for you? I kind of have an idea what colors I like and would put in a similar color scheme, or for a shower curtain and hand towels. I would go to the store, any store, and buy something at least yay big (you know, bigger than that little gold pottery thing) that represents these colors. Buy a washcloth, a folder, a t-shirt, look around your house for large samples of solid colors, if you don't want to buy something new. Live with it, audition it, in your bathroom. Do you hate it in one week? Then it's the wrong color.

I guess what I'm saying is, if you're not feeling it, or you're indecisive, it might be the fishes' way of saying, "keep the white trim."

Keep it white and colour splash it with towels and accessories. That way it's also easy to change if you end up not liking the accent colour anymore.

Definitely keep the trim white. Save the money (and time) for some really nice, thick solid towels in your favorite color, or pick up a color that is used in the bedroom or elsewhere in the house. But I would make sure to choose a rich, nuanced color, not a crayon-bright primary. The mustard that you mention is a possibility, as is a deep salmon, deep leaf green, or a rich teal. I'm afraid apple green or bright red might look look out of place with the wallpaper.

black would be nice since youve already got the tile border to match it up with... i also think it would accentuate the print on the wall paper. personally, id keep any sort of color on the smaller scale since it seems as though you wish for the floral paper to be the star of the room.

I'd probably stick with black and white. But, if I were a little more adventurous I'd want to paint a hint of red on the trim. Maybe a thin line? I've got a laundry room that I'm going to do in big black and white tile floor, cream cabinets and a brick red colored staircase. Maybe that's why I've got red on my mind...

Love your tile! I think it's all (including the geometric black-n-white detailed strip) exactly that same as in my house -- built in either 1929 or 1931, Essex County NJ. Is your house same era, similar nabe?

thanks, everyone, for all the suggestions...i'll keep you posted. either way, we have to clean up the paint (it's caked on thick and messy from years of layering).

Well picking color is hard for Tile, that's why you posted most likely. I suggest that you try some nice cool whites.

At www.DrySamples.com you can try different colors and not have to worry about repainting over your paint swatches. I would try a swatch of 925 by Benjamin Moore. See how that looks.
