Chicago Sources for a Long Slipcovered Sofa?
Good Questions

pbslipcover082809.jpgQ: I am currently on the hunt for a Pottery Barn-esqe slipcover sofa without such a high price tag (under $1200 preferably). The tricky part is that ideally it would be a over 90" long (I am blessed with one large wall in my apartment and a 6'3 boyfriend) and a sleeper (not a deal breaker if it's not). I don't want to order online as this is a piece of furniture that should be properly sat on/laid on/checked out/etc before I pay for delivery. Outside of the usual suspects like...

...Crate and Barrel, Ashley, Ethan Allen, IKEA, Harlem does anyone have suggestions for furniture stores that may carry items like this in the Chicago-land area? I feel like there has to be someplace I haven't looked yet that carries quality furniture in a style I like... HELP!

Ya, you're going to have a hard time find something like that with a lower price tag. Go used and get it slip covered (which might cost as much as the Pottery Barn sofa), or go to Ikea, I'm afraid.

Possibly Room & Board? I agree with DUSKIN though, Ikea has great deals on slipcovered sofas.

Find a good sale: I recently purchased a Bennett sofa from Ethan Allen on sale for $1200. It is not slipcovered, but includes removable cushion covers and many fabric options.

Another vote for IKEA ektorp in the longer length. I was skeptical when I bought it 7 years ago -- it was so lightweight. Would it hold up? Hold up it has -- and that's with active boys jumping on it every day. It's super comfy and the slipcovers are machine washable. We bought an extra one so it's easy to switch one out while the other is in the wash.

jcpenney sells the "linden street friday slipcovered sofa" (looks just like that pottery barn one) which is 91" long and on sale for $799 with 7 different color options- it has recieved a couple excellent reviews

or there's always the ikea ektorp like mentioned above.

how about this? not sure it's as long as you want. We bought a slip-covered Rowe a few years back (although not a sleeper) on sale for about $800 and love it. It's super comfy and made well. my 6'3" hubby fits fine when stretched out.

have you checked out cb2? we just bought a couch that we've been drooling over last year and couldn't be happier. it price tags are a little cheaper than other stores but the styles are modern. in terms of what you are looking for i would recommend you look at the movie sofa, slipcovered which rings up at 1,199...

hope this helps...

Hotel furniture liquidators can have very reasonable prices for basic pieces like this sofa, and then you can get slip covers made or make them yourself.

If you were looking for something more quirky, I would say estate sales, craigslist and thrift stores, plus a whole lotta patience.

roy's on sheffield is a great place for quality furniture at reasonable prices. we just got a huge sectional for $1400, which was $700 less than what we had seen other places. their display room has much more variety than their website.

otherwise i've also had luck at carson pirie scott furniture, they have many locations in the chicago area.

A 90" sofa is HUGE. Make sure you can actually fit it in your apartment (stairways, etc.) before you order it! Also, not to be negative, but most people buy furniture that is too large for their space. Just because something fits on a wall doesn't mean its the correct scale. Newer construction accommodates big furniture, but vintage apartments look funny with disproportionately large pieces. Just something to consider in case you are in a pre-1960's building.

Thank you all so much for the posts. It has been pretty tough trying to get a good couch for a good price in this style. I have looked at the Ikea Ektorp, for an investment of an extra couple of hundred dollars more I was hoping to get something that would hold up for 8-10 years since this will be our primary seating. I looked at the Rowe couches- I really thought that they were my only option after Pottery Barn or Crate and Barrel, but I can't seem to find anyone who carries them in there showroom (we looked at Darvin, but you have to order one to sit on it and once you buy it there are no returns unless it's damaged- not really a gamble I want to take with the $1400 they quoted me). I checked out the JCPenney link and the couch is exactly what I want for about 1/2 the price I was willing to pay- and it has the feather wrap for the cushions and 8-way hand tied springs. The reviews are great, I'm wondering if any of the people who recommended this actually own it? They have a 7 day return policy, so if I don't like it, it can always be returned....Thank you also for the proportioning tips, I couldn't agree with you more. We actually live in a completely renovated 1980's building, and our living/dining/kitchen is all open. We have a lot of dead space, so getting a couch to fit the large wall (mind you, with a solid foot left over on either side) will change up our seating and actually open up the space. I knew this website would be a great help and you guys didn't disappoint me with your helpful comments! Thanks, Mary Sue
