Cookie has a great post up with info Laurie David's book The Down to Earth Guide to Global Warming. Included is a chart listing six very easy to implement simple steps that not only are eco-friendly but wallet friendly as well. Jump below to check it out:

These six actions are ones that we're sure many of us do already, but it is really good to see the sizable impact of such basic, simple choices.
And for those of us who haven't tried them yet, putting these six ideas into practice may leave you feeling virtuous and just a bit thrifty, always a good combination.

If you're supposed to bake chocolate chip cookies at 375 for 6 minutes, you should be able to calculate the number of joules of energy this transmits per minute to the cookies and then determine the number of joules transmitted while the oven heats and then determine how many additional minutes are required once the oven is heated to deliver the same total number of joules, yes?
The time it takes to heat an oven would depend on the oven, but it should be a linear curve and not require any calculus. I just need to dig out my college physics textbook and find the equations for convection...

Is there someone at the Kitchn who can answer this dilemma? I have the same question as lurker2209, although I'd admittedly just wait until my cookies look done. But baking is more than just an application of heat - I wonder how the chemical reaction of leavening, liquid, and dry ingredients will work when heat is applied differently than stated in the directions.
And if you use the pre-heating oven to help bread rise, to heat the kitchen, or to re-heat food for eating, does that negate the energy use from pre-heating?

I'm interested in the filtered vs. bottled water debate. How dangerous is our tap water? Couldn't we just chuck both the filter AND the plastic? My Chicago tap water tastes just fine, thanks, and I haven't sprouted a third ear or anything from drinking straight from the tap.

Laurie David must cook bad food. Preheating is a must for proper cooking. You'd be better off turning the oven off early than not preheating.
How about: turn off your computer and quit writing/reading blogs about being green.

Agreed, pre-heating is a must. Turn off my computer? Then I'd have to buy more magazines and newspapers, and that would waste paper. How many joules are transmitted in paper production and printing versus using a computer? :)
