Eco Friendly Wastebaskets by Umbra

2008-06-03-Silver Metalla Can.jpgIt's not everyday a trash can grabs our attention. However, while shopping at The Container Store this past weekend, we came across these great biodegradable plastic trash cans by Umbra.

The Silver Metalla (above the jump) and Bronze Metalla cans have a metalized foil laminate with an unexpected pop of color on the inside. We love how these two are minimalist in design, but also have the look of metal at a fraction of the cost.

The Graphic Can has a stylish foil outer lining with patterned artwork that can brighten up any office, bathroom, or multi-use workspace.

Finally we have the Treela Can. These cans come in a faux wood Cherry, Oak, or Ebony finish. All of these trash cans are made of biodegradable plastic, which means that if they end up in a landfill, they will break down into a powder and occupy less space. Even better, they are all only $14.99.

Wow, these just beg to be flipped upside down and turned into pendant lamps with the addition of a hanging socket kit from Pier 1 or Urban Outfitters! And, less than $30 altogether!

Better use CF bulbs, though, unless you cut vent holes in the top (bottom).

i have my suspicions as to whether these are biodegradable or just degradable. true biodegradability breaks down into organic compounds; commercialized 'biodegradability' is when a material turns into powder and dissolves the structure, but doesn't necessary get reabsorbed into the ecology. from what i saw on the website, it looks like these fall into the latter category, which makes them eco but not bio.
