Gourds-Turned-Vases

0930_gourd01.jpg

The term "gourd vase" often refers to any vase with a shape influenced by the vegetable. But here, we're looking at literal gourds made into vases, just in time for autumn...

Featured in Better Homes and Gardens, we love these shapely gourds as vases. It's a cheap (and green) seasonal decoration that leaves lots of room for variation and your own creative touch.

See how to make these vases right here.

lovely but how could you keep the water fresh?

not very practical. Most gourds don't have a flat bottom, and if/once you are able to balance them, they'll be thrown out of balance with the flowers tilting out of them.

Water in gourd would start to rot quickly.

Okay for a photo shoot - if they're your thing, but would never consider this for an actual dinner.

Nice, but my 5 gourd plants only set two (!) gourds so I'm loath to cut them up instead of letting them dry for future enjoyment.

Oh, it's easy enough to trim the bottom to make the green ones sit flat.

My boyfriend's sister made a bunch of these for a party last year. They were quite pretty and creative. I took a few home and 2 days later had to pitch them because they had started to rot inside and smelled bad. Very short lived. Not worth the time to carve them out, in my opinion.
