Green Idea: Residential Deconstruction

2007-07-27-greenbean.jpgBuilding in Reverse.

Chicago's first residential deconstruction is currently underway according to the always-informative local green architecture blog, Green Bean.

A two story home on the north side is being deconstructed, a process in which building is carefully dismantled, allowing for the salvage of all components (down to "every last stud") rather than demolition.

Green Bean applauds the project, process and Urban Habitat Chicago (UHC) and The Reuse People.

This makes so much sense - we were happy to see that the second deconstruction project is already in the works - for a home in Bridgeport.

The pluses according to UHC?

  • Results in Reuse and Sale of Products
  • Builds a Trained Labor Force
  • Keeps Air and Water Cleaner
  • Keeps Thousands of Tons of Material Out of Landfills
