Green Ideas from Bucky Fuller's Biosphere

A visit to Montreal's Biosphere over the weekend reminded us of the forward thinking of R. Buckminster Fuller. He's designed the US Pavilion for Montreal's World Expo of 1967 (pictured up top). The dome itself is an example of one of his green ideas: to provide as much shelter as possible with as little material as possible. But there's lots more...

Fuller's green ideas (before "green" existed) also stretched to water conservation, transportation, and living small. He designed a shower that atomizes water, allowing one to be fully cleansed with only one cup of water. He was inspired from an experience he had when he was in the Navy. He was out on the ship's deck in his uniform and there was a misty rain in the air. By the time he went inside, he noticed some grease stains had been washed from his uniform and he felt clean and refreshed.

He also designed a bathroom that's as efficient as the layout of an airstream trailer. And his Rowing Needle provided self-powered transportation at sea.

Pictured above, a cartoon "Bucky" encourages us to share and support one another in order to live a more efficient and harmonious life. For more on this Spaceship Earth notion, check out his Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth, available in its entirety online. I can see bathing in the mist, but... how would you rinse your hair?

In 1976, a fire ravaged the interior of the dome and the site was closed until 1990. I remember as a teenager going on some urbain expeditions to explore the inside of the condemned dome. Even back then, I was facinated with architecture.

He was also a leader in prefabrication methods that were later adopted by charles and ray eames among others. Prefab has been making a HUGE comeback lately for it's efficiencies in both economy and ecology. Check out Michelle Kaufmann's website. Our chicago architectural firm is also developing a low cost prefab house. Kudos to Bucky!!
