You've heard of hybrid vehicles; get ready for hybrid housing. This type of construction combines modular, prefabricated parts with a site-built home to save money and reduce waste. Via Prefabcosm, we found an article from the North Carolina-based News Observer about one such hybrid home in Asheville...
Designed by Studio B Architecture, the home is based around three modular components: a single-story kitchen/laundry/bath combo on one end, and two bed/bath modules stacked two stories high on the other end. The core of the home is a site-built living room and staircase that spans the modular sections with a slanted ceiling.

Prefab housing has been overlooked for to long, with the economic down turn I think it will see a boost.
Other great Prefab companies are:

There is no such thing as the "North Carolina News Observer." The newspaper you're linking to is the News & Observer, published in Raleigh. Prefabcosm got it right.

Sheesh, i could fit my entire house in the space shown in this pic. All 640 sq ft of it. When is enough space enough? This certainly ain't no apartment...
Do like the style & prefab elements tho.
