CHI House Tour: Kirki & David’s Growed Up Go-To

(Hello again to Julie, trying out from Minneapolis for a spot on the AT: Chicago team. Enjoy the house tour she put together - comments are welcome!)

2-23-housetourlogo.jpgWhat’s the age of your décor? Mine clings to 29. But this 2 parents/kids/cats household lives like grownups and still remembers who they were in the day. Friends hang as easily as kid art. Mementoes represent sans kitsch. Sure, there’s the influence of recent good tastemakers. But having shot more crannies than slideshows allow, we can say there’s more David, Kirki & co. than the ghost of Martha past.

Lesson: never take yourself or your kitchen table too seriously. And ditch that old college print in the spare room.

Style – Martha & pre-flea markup shopping with edgy at the edges

Inspiration—The great Upper Midwest palette of birch, water, stone & bark

Fave Element—She (the Aries) cites the Wearstleresque ram; he’s partial to the No Future poster salvaged when local record shop/institution Northern Sun folded years ago

Biggest Challenge—credit is due for integrating their girls’ lives and art without getting Gymboreed

What Friends Say
—“Oh, is it that late already?” Guests nest on winter nights in and summers al Coke machine/beer-fridge

Biggest Embarrassment
—compulsive tidiness

Proudest DIY—palette connects rooms without defaulting to white

Best Advice
—“Don’t do everything at once.”

Just Got—Ram, at TJ Maxx & More

Dream Source—landscaping beyond Zone-4-by-numbers plants

beautiful! I especially like the dining room. Elegant and clean, but balanced with personal details.

Thanks for sourcing the paint, too. Would the paint colors work with wood trim, too? I would love these colors for our home.

OK, I've not tested the new slideshow format on my Mac at home - another slideshow worked just fine last night on Firefox - and at work on Windows/IE, where it works almost not at all.

Personal touches and attitude throughout give this house a 'wow' factor that's inviting and livable. Makes you want to dust off your ‘I know I’ll use this later/estate/flea market finds’ and get to work. References are great. Thanks.

Yes! Thanks again for letting us know what the paint colors are. I love the gray. I've just bought a place and really appreciate your advice to not do it all at once.....It is really easy to what to get it all done, but not financially realistic (at least for me).

Hi,
The house is absolutely lovely, but I have a BIIIIIIG problem with the slideshow format. AT - could you please please bring back the original black background, simple beautiful format. This completely ruins the whole experience. Also, on a laptop, you have to keep scrolling down to see the whole picture.
I know ads are important for revenue, but at the cost of aesthetics on a design blog? I don't think so. This way readership will be lost! I hope fellow readers agree with me.

One of the most beautiful homes I've seen on this site. I like the subtlety of the paint backdrop, the furniture, the kitchen, the vignettes, and especially the art the children have made. This house is comfortable, chic, and understated at the same time. One question: Are the downstairs moldings new?

A couple of answers to questions posted....
Yes to the reclaimed wood question-this piece of wood was
beckoning us at the furniture designers studio-it was part
of another home project and was left over and we used almost the rest of it-not sure what the wood was used for originally.
Yes the moulding is original to the house-built in 1919.

Awesome job Julie-thanks for touring our house-so fun to be
a part of this!

And to the person who asked about the countertops...

Ours are sealed with an industrial sealant so they clean up with mild detergent just like most.

Thanks for all the kind comments. This has been a lot of fun for us.

i too need to gush over this post ... gorgeous. a couple of quick questions -- what are the striped pillows in the living room (love the way you did that) and the window treatments in the office? and as for this blogger -- more please!!

Hi again-kirki here-
Those striped pillows are from Room and Board and are hand screenprinted from an artist who has a line there-crazy texture-you can actually feel the paint in the pillow-
Window treatments are just from Hunter Douglas and I like to complement the room w the color of the binding strip of material (what is that thing called??) on the blind-make sense??
Forgot to comment on the cement countertops-because they are sealed smooth w an epoxy we are able to really use whatever we want to on them-but we are easy on them and just use Caldrea's counter top cleanser.

This one should be called a "Home Tour" rather than a "House Tour". Somehow, "House Tour" makes me think of model homes, or architect's display homes. Where everything is done just so, but there is no individuality or sense of anyone living there...because there is NOT anyone living there.

This home has a personality. It has wide and varied interests. It has a little something for everyone.

Things for the kids, and the kids get to be kids in this home:
http://gallery.apartmenttherapy.com/photo/060608julie/kidroom

Funky road side found object type thing with the old style speed limit sign:
http://gallery.apartmenttherapy.com/photo/060608julie/entry

Nature in it's beauty and simplicity with the wood and stones:
http://gallery.apartmenttherapy.com/photo/060608julie/diningflrdecor

The colors of the cups with the stones reminiscent of the Araucana eggs that Martha had highlighted in a paint line she had here:
http://www.finepaintsofeurope.com/ms_color_collection.aspx

Unfortunately they don't have the pages there they used to, so this screen at Martha's shows some of the colors:
http://www.marthastewart.com/portal/site/mslo/menuitem.0e0eb51a2e6b5ad593598e10d373a0a0/?vgnextoid=db9b2e912b11f010VgnVCM1000003d370a0aRCRD&vgnextfmt=default

Anyway, this is the kind of thing I like to see. It shows how many things can be pulled together for a cohesive whole, that incorporates a wide variety of interests and styles.

Nice use of FLOR tiles in the dining area. Again, showing a mix of styles, successfully combining the built-in colonial shelving, chandeliers, a sturdy and practical table and chairs and bench, with modern FLOR:

Yes, this is a HOME tour. Thanks so much for inviting us in.

Looks like I'm alone in thinking this, but the "punk" "edgy" details look horribly out of place. Seems like the homeowners are trying too hard or are in denial about their suburban life.

I'm totally missing something here because out of 2300 sq. ft. I don't see the 'wow' factor because most of the photos are vignettes. And are we losing sight of the AT philosophy of "small" by showing a 2300 sq. ft. home? Or McMansion by most standards of the readers here? Maybe it's just me.

Anne, I too would rather see small places. But I can often find GREAT ideas, even if it is in a big place.

But I don't get to USE all those ideas in a small place. Here's a home online, and this IS the living room/dining room, and the only room other than the little kitchen, little bathroom, and a bunk room:
http://www.cusatocottages.com/photogallery.php?photo=6

The right wall is the kitchen opening, and the bathroom door. That opening in the back of the picture, that is the bunk room/bedroom, and it splits off to each side of the visible door. The visible door is a closet.

I want to see what people can do with a space that size.
