Whenever we see articles on how to outfit a guest room we always think, "What if we put all that effort and energy into making ourselves feel at home?" Browsing Martha Stewart's tips for creating the perfect guest room, we thought we might take this weekend to step it up a notch in our own space. Click below for Martha's suggestions.
• Set out essentials and little luxuries in a basket. (Wouldn't it be nice to make a spa basket for yourself?)
• Provide adequate closet space with good hangers. (See this post for 20 tips on organizing and upgrading your closet.)

• Keep a water glass and carafe by the bedside table. (Or buy one for your own room.)
• Hang towels on hooks with colored loops to designate which towel belongs to which person.

• If you have the space, set up a reading nook with a side table, reading materials, and good lighting. (For tips on how to create your own reading nook, see this post.)
• Make the bed with adequate pillows for sleeping and propping up the head while reading. Outfit the bed with both light and heavy blankets.

• Keep a clean entryway with space for guests (and you) to hang coats and remove shoes.
• Stock up on bathroom supplies like toilet paper, hand towels, and bath towels.

nice post, nice idea.

Any idea where the carafe/cup combo is from? Also, the tree hatrack?

Ringo-
I just bought the Cora Carafe from CB2. It looks similar to the one in the pic.

I got all excited about the clever ideas for a guest room which couldn't have come at a better time! My mother in law will be staying with me a few days after I return home from surgery, and I was just in the process of preparing a room for her.
Some of the ideas almost seemed suited to having a houseguest that would be there when you weren't and almost smacked of a "bed and breakfast". I could see where using these ideas would make a guest feel very welcomed and special - like they wouldn't want to leave....
... on the other hand - do I REALLY want my mother in law to get THAT comfortable at my place .....? ;-)
I will definitely be using some of these ideas.

my dad liked those tree coat racks too. he made one... he literally found a small tree 9it was dead when we found it, we lived right on the towns outskirts so we had aussie outback to pick and choose from) painted it and stuck it through the centre hole of an old water tank lid (it was pretty small but it was perfect) looked really cool. he must have been ahead of his time 'cos this would have been 10 years ago. :)

Another great idea is to put some reading material that is of your guests interest on the bed. Sometimes if they are a early riser and you are not this will occupy them until you are ready to go. an of course preset the coffee pot so all they have to do is start it. Auto start is the best if you have it. Fumbling with an unfamiliar coffee maker can be frustrating.

For those of you who like the look of the coat rack... This little guy is a much cheaper substitute (though admittedly won't hold a coat): http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?_dyncharset=ISO-8859-1&navAction=jump&id=13213251&search=true&color=10
