apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Look!: Our new bedroom floors

2006-06-20-black.jpg2006-06-20-red.jpg

The process was a bit painful. Take every single book (two walls full), each piece of furniture, every article of clothing, and all the toys an eight year old owns and move them from the bedrooms of your apartment and stack it in your living area. Then live, work, eat and sleep in the middle of everything for a week while you paint the two rooms and then (finally!) have new floors installed.

2006-06-21-cayennetile.JPGWe replaced our old carpet in the bedrooms with Mannington Commercial hard flooring from Home Carpet One in Midnight and Cayenne. We are happy with the results - it feels clean, modern and the furniture just seems to float on the color fields below. The transition from the hardwood we have in the rest of the apartment to the bedrooms works too - the nice clean edges of the hard floors next to the warm wood tone looks good.

We painted the walls high gloss super white in both rooms to bounce the natural light around and balance the intensity of the color on the floors. A long process (the ceilings are high, arggh!), but again, we like the end result.

Mike, the installer from Home Carpet One did an amazing job. He was friendly, speedy and his work is impeccable.

And the best part is, it's done!

I love that flooring! Can you tell us the approximate cost for doing the two rooms?

Luv the red floor! I wish it didn't suck for resale.

Thanks Katie!

Lesley:
We paid 2.49 sq./ft. for the flooring alone which means 4.00 sq./ft, installed.
We had new subflooring put down, too, at around 2.00 sq./ ft, installed.
Then you add other materials and labor (carpet takeup and haul away, adhesive, base shoe and it's installation).

In the end the whole job came out to around 7.50 sq./ft. final total cost including everything!

Janel,
It looks beautiful. are there additional pictures you could post to give us a more up-close look? Is the black speckled or solid? Did you use sheet or tile? How does this product compare to linoleum (which I'm considering using in my home)? Thanks for any further details you can add. Excellent job--the black is incredible!

Devyn: The red was irresistable...i was powerless to choose anything else.

ocgirl: Thanks! The colors do have a bit of speckle to them. It is from the Solidpoint line from Mannington, so the variation/speckle is pretty minimal. We figured a bit of a mottled effect would be better to disguise inevitable scuffs and scratches between cleanings. Closeups of the tiles and colors are here:

http://www.mannington.com/commercial/resilient/style.asp?style_id=812&type=2

FYI: They look much more speckled in the swatches online that they do in person.

The overall effect is solid, but it is the tiles - meaning the pro installation really was worth it - totally smooth.

Biggest difference (besides price) from linoleum: Linoleum is a natural product and these are not. They are vinyl/recycled vinyl. I think these might be somewhat easier care, but only time will tell.

Home Carpet One does a great job! I was very pleased with the installation of my bedroom carpet. Definitely go there if you are in need of flooring!

Congrats on the floors. Don't become a slave to resale value! Enjoy your home and enjoy the look you create in it. For every potential buyer that doesn't want red floors, there is another potential buyer who really really would be glad to have them. I like them and will consider the colored floors when I get ready to do my living room.

Janel-
Those floors are great looking! Have you noticed any "gassing off " yet? Curious to see how you like living with them.
Thanks for the inspiration,
Shannon

Shannon-
Thanks!
Happily the adhesive and finishing coat didn't seem too bad at all in terms of odor/ickyness - whew!

Vow ! fabulous. My question is - don't you have to wax the floor in order to keep all nice and glossy ?

I have put linoleum sheet in my place. - Tarkett fibre floors. People have mistaken it for hardwood flooring.

Solar:
It's a no-wax floor. We put a coat of an Armstrong-made sealer/finish on it which you can refresh every 30 washings or so. I am investigating a more eco-friendly sealer made by Marmoleum which I am hoping I can use as well.

Painting the walls in a high gloss white is interesting... not for me, but I dig your implementation!
