Last week we posted a question about freestanding fireplaces, a topic that brought out some great reader suggestions. While the consensus states that going with a denatured alcohol burning fireplace may not heat you up too much, it's an alternative that we haven't explored much here on AT. The EcoSmart ventless, flueless pieces are great solutions for urbanites who long for a fireplace.
The Fire Company says:
The EcoSmart Fire is an Australian innovation - an environmentally friendly open fireplace. The EcoSmart Fire is flue less and does not require any installation or utility connection for fuel supply, which makes it ideal for apartment and city living. Fuelled by a renewable energy (denatured ethanol), it burns clean and is virtually maintenance free. Featuring remarkable design flexibility, the simplicity of the EcoSmart burner and the modular nature of its design grants consumers with significant versatility and choice.
Beware: pricing is steep (think upwards of $5,000, depending on the style).

Yet again, another f*#%ing cool product that isn't sold in the US. (or is it?) If it is, it most certainly is imported. No American company has the balls to produce something as tasteful at this.
Damn those stylish Eropeans (and Canadians)!
Damn them indeed... I'm already plotting how to get my hands on one of those burners!!
i'm terrible for not including this in the post: Fear not. Chicago-based Casamonte distributes these! They're at 1355 W Concord PL, (773) 278-4100.
here's another article with some additional info on the EcoSmart fireplaces.
I built an LV Home recently and the #1 most frustrating item to find was a modern fireplace. There are very, very few options in the U.S. Just across the border in Canada you have a lot of cool options, and Europe has more options than you could ever want. (Italy in particular, to no one's surprise). EcoSmartFire is in the U.S., but $5000 for a little bin surrounded by a stainless steel square? Production cost for one of those is probably a couple hundred bucks. No thanks. BTW, we went with a Heat N Glo Soulstice. That and their Soho model allow for you to drywall right up to the edge. They also sell various edging that looks modern.
I was thinking of getting one of the Real Flame models from The Jensen Company (click my name below for link), take it apart, and then build my own modern surround for it. They have traditional-looking models starting at $299, shipping included, and ones built into a table for only $229.
I hadn't thought about using the table model before, but now after viewing the EcoSmart pics above it looks like with a few pieces of tempered glass and the Jensen table model I could build my own version for around $500.
Expo Design Centers will be carrying an extremely cool gas surface mount firebox, that when installed looks exactly like an LCD Plasma TV monitor. The gas runs behind glass without a log.
It kicks out alot of heat and needs to be professionally installed.
It's British, and while not cheap it will retail for considerably less than these.
Well I for one think they are bloody great. It could be someone's Christmas gift.
I hear these have a UL number and are considered appliances. Does anyone know if they are allowed in New York City?
