As big proponents of the old fashioned (or modern) fan, and since we're not planning on turning on our gigantic (inherited) window a/c unit this summer unless absolutely necessary, we were happy to see the roundup of cool-looking and retro-inspired fans in the recent issue of Time Out. While we don't love our contacts drying out or shouting over the noise of a true oldie, we do love the looks of charming fans, the whirring lull at night, and no-chill overkill that we often associate with a/c. I love retro inspired fans! I bought one recently at Lowes but the problem is it sounds like a jet engine, even on the lowest setting!! I'd love to find a nice looking retro fan that is quiet.

Try opening at least two windows - one on either side of the house, and keep all the doors between the rooms open.
You'll be amazed at how breezes flow through without the need for electric fans or A/C...

I own the Vornado fan. It's great -- quiet, effective and, if you'll pardon the pun, very cool.
