I often wonder what safety precautions one should take when refinishing the facade of a fireplace. Is it something that's really recommended we do ourselves or are professionals the only sure bet?

As long as the materials aren't flammable (and ceramic tile, mastic and grout aren't) then you're fine doing it yourself.

I'd love to see how the subway tiles would look herringbone style - if anyone has a pic they could post I'd love to see it.

You might be able to find that herringbone look on the Daltile website under patterns. They also have pics of rooms to show off the tile, so you may find the herringbone on the site. Called Rittenhouse Square, if my memory serves me right.
