A Look Back: Herman Miller Ads from the Fifties

The past decade has experienced such a resurgence in popularity of classic Mid-C design that we sometimes forget just how long this stuff really has been around - it was a very different world when the design was new. Nothing hits home the passage of time like seeing the original ads - take a peek below the jump to see how Herman Miller promoted the pieces back in the day:

Oh lord these are gorgeous! When the Eames Lounge chair exhibit hit the Museum of Art & Design they had a bunch of actual vintage ephemera: beautifully graphic, silly, lushly letterpress printed, and always colorful! Anyone looking for a book idea? - compile HM advertising and I'd buy it!

The furniture wasn't inexpensive back then either... But it was much more in the realm of the average person. Now it is beyond rediculous how much they can get for new production classics.

Devyn - from what i've heard, if you had $3000 in 1967 you could either buy a couch or a brand new Ford Mustang. Furniture hasn't really gone up in price; our cultural value of it has dropped.
