Happy Birthday: Eames Lounge Chair

2006-03-30-lounge.jpg
The classic lounge and ottoman turns fifty.
Designed in 1956 as a birthday gift for director Billy Wilder, this piece is being celebrated in style on its golden anniversary.

A true visual signifier for mid-century design, the chair is the subject of a new exhibition, organized by the Grand Rapids Art Museum. The exhibition opens in May at the Museum of Arts & Design in NY and will move to Grand Rapids in October. In conjunction with the exhibition, a 200-page hard cover book will be published.

Fun to watch: The chair makes it's television debut (with Charles, Ray and Arlene Francis!). Viewable by selecting "history" in the lounge chair section of the site.
