The Commons: Historic Photo Archives on Flickr

Did you know that the Library of Congress has a Flickr account? The Smithsonian too, not to mention the photo archives from the Library of Virginia and the George Eastman House Collection. They're all participants in a Flickr project known as "the Commons," an online archive of photography within the public domain...

Institutions participating in the project hope that by providing free content online with no known copyright restrictions, they'll make these hidden treasures available to the public and potentially collect useful information from viewers. In our brief search of the Commons, we rounded up a small sampling of historic interiors:

1 John Singer Sargent in his Paris Studio, 1885 from the Smithsonian
2 Abraham Lincoln with Glasses and Newspaper, 1863 from the Library of Congress
3 Nakoaktok Chief's Daughter, c. 1907-30 by Edward Curtis from the Smithsonian
4 Women and Children Sitting Inside Tipi, 1900 from Oregon State University
5 Interior of House of Lawrence Alma-Tadema, 1870 from the Smithsonian

6 Malaria Poster, 1914 from the Library of Congress
7 Kitchen Utensils, c. 1941-45 from the Library of Congress
8 McCall's Cover by Nickolas Muray, 1944 from the George Eastman House Collection
9 G.E. Supply, 1952 from the Library of Virginia
10 New Mexico Homesteader and Family, 1940 from the Library of Congress

Thanks, Sarah. This is awesome for us fiction writer folk too. Quite the treasure trove. Of course, now I have yet another way to procrastinate. Ah well...
