Home Design Trend Forecast 2010: Retro Homemaking

A second report (the first is right here) on our visit this week to the Sears Holdings Design Center: another trend that their Home Design team is developing for 2010 is a nostalgic, lighthearted look back at homemaking in the last century - a specific type of "Granny Chic" that is all about what we perceive today to be simpler times...

Think aprons, freshly laundered sheets on the line and hand-crocheted pot holders (the better to pull those homemade chocolate chip cookies from the oven). It's a little bit Cath Kidston and little bit Amy Butler, filtered through a good thrift store vibe.

The colors are fresh: whites with brights. The patterns are mixed: retro florals, plaids, gingham and checks. Crafty accents are part of the mix: patchwork and crochet.

Kyra, owner of Lily's Cafe in Stonington, Maine has dressed like this for years. Her restaurant has this granny's cottage feel to it and she makes retro comfort food with gourmet ingredients. Go granny!

I just recently found some similar things at http://www.gingersnapsdesign.com

The aprons are so cute. Honestly, its a tragedy I can't cook worth spit.

My heart just melted when I read this post. First off, thank you. And second, I am in love with the retro kitchen idea. I've been trying to incorporate that feel into my own rental. I'm going with the classic aqua blue color.

Sorry folks, but I doubt that what actually makes it to stores will be this exciting. They wanted to debut this look for Spring 09 and it got nixed. Most likely it will happen again.

It is nice to see a softer textile look back into the kitchen.
I LOVE it!
But my friends would laugh if they caught me wearing that apron.
