5 Current Color Combos
Chicago Tribune Home & Garden 07.27.08

stephendrucker.jpgThe talented Stephen Drucker (who we had the pleasure of meeting when we were in NY in the Spring) recently hosted a House Beautiful Color Institute at the Merchandise Mart and the Tribune covered it. Jump below for a quick recap:

According to the Tribune, the editor in chief of HB said some wise words: Everybody can pick one color pretty easily...It's the second color that sets it in motion. It's really all about the combination. We agree 100%, so getting some suggestions from pros makes things much easier when considering a color change for your home.

Here are Drucker's suggestions for 5 combos that are fresh and modern -

  • Pale Blue and Apple Green: paint your wood headboard in Granny Smith apple green, a really beautiful, strong color...and then get the most beautiful pale blue sheets

  • Navy and Pink: the perfect masculine/feminine combination

  • Caramel and Aqua: the next incarnation of "chocqua"

  • Pale Blue and Red: One of my favorites is red lampshades on sconces, table lamps or a chandelier in an otherwise pale blue room. That's all the red you'd need to make the room take off.

  • Blue & White: If you make the blue more of a peacock blue, it's going to have a little more of a fashion edge — and look a lot chicer. If you use more of an ivory with a paler blue, you'll get a much more romantic feeling.

Read the entire article at the Tribune for more on these color combos.

Take home message: If all else fails, whatever it is, pair it up with pale blue!

I have the blue/ivory white and green combos and love it-
I have had the same modern upholstery pieces in grey forever so I wanted to change the look from the monochromatic look I have had for a long time to something fresh. My wood floors are honey color wood and so tired of the white walls with greyish taupe accents. Three months ago I painted the accent walls BM "cashmere grey" which is a soft pale blue so beautiful it makes me happy and the wainscot and ceiling a buttery/Ivory white color Ralph Lauren "Egret" a great soft white. I added a couple apple green glass pieces that I thrifted and one new piece..added a honey and pale blue rug that I bought from Room Service, a couple of pillows that have green and blue combos. I am so happy with this color combo. I have lots of natural light with big windows and a glass door to the back patio. This color combo works well with nature, my back room feels like a modern bird cage and an extension of my back patio. It now looks very fresh and relaxing.

The Navy and Pink combo grosses me out for some reason..cute combo on a kid but not for interiors.

This months Vogue with Kate Moss on the cover shows some really nice color combos.

I hate pale blue and red together. Seems to be showing up everywhere, but I can't stand it. Not sure what my problems is.

I'm not a pale blue and red fan either. I like the idea of the pale blue and apple green, but I'm not sure I could carry it off.
