Hot Closet Contest: Roni's Lockers

Welcome to Roni, our first Hot Closet contestant. If her solution inspires you, go ahead and send us photos and a description of your closet this week!

Name: Roni
Location: Wicker Park
Closet: Coats, etc.

"Our hot closet isn’t a closet at all…even though it is a newer construction, our condo is seriously closet deficient. A massive IKEA PAX unit in our bedroom holds the clothes that don't live in the closet, but we were PAXed to the max and decided to go a different route for our 'coat closet.' We got a unit of 12 lockers from Penco Products, just like the ones that housed my junior high geography books...

"Locker #1 is my boyfriend’s, I’m #12 and guests’ coats hang in #10. The remaining small cubby lockers hold just about everything, including our winter accessories, my dog’s toys and coats (hey, it’s Chicago!) and firewood. We removed the shelf dividing two of the smaller lockers to put in a compact stereo system, and the speakers are on top of the locker unit. Hooks on either side hold extra seating and a stepladder. It may not be a look for everyone, but we love the funny, industrial edge and our guests get a kick out of having an assigned locker."

While it is a clever solution in that it's durable and conceals quite a bit of clutter, I find it to be ever so introusive. Perhaps it's the massive black object in the room, maybe it's the lack of varrying texture/color of the object or perchance it's that with a modular product I hate to see it used so straight forward...

Wonderful things could have been done with different color units staggered along the wall interspersed with shelves and areas of plain painted wall allowing the storage to be a focus of color and texture rather than a void. Expanding this idea to not be a plopped-down box but rather to be a built-in storage solution would qualify it to be a winner. As it currently stands it only deserves an honnorable mention.

I love that Roni looked beyond conventional furniture stores to find a product that suits her particular needs and is really fun too! I imagine it's a great conversation piece with guests. Very original.

This is great! I use an old orange school locker that I found at a garage sale for $10 as a broom closet. I needed a place to keep cleaning supplies because I needed all my real closet space for clothing and such. A locker was the perfect solution!

I loooove this idea, it's very smart. I wonder how much it cost to ship from the supplier?

What a great way to add storage space. My boyfriend would especially like the idea of having his own locker, since he says my stuff always "encroaches" on his.

I really don't know what to say here... talk about unique! I'd love to see a shot of the room this lives in because it's definitely going to draw attention to itself. I remember being in college and dividing up closet space with my roommate. He was cluttered and I'm a neat freak. Come to think of it, I've been through that with women I lived with too... something like this would be ideal!

...yeah, but Fung Shui Master can be ignored...

I really like this, especially in shiny black!

So funny! My husband and I did the same thing!

Except ours is grey and stands in the hall entry-way of our 2-flat. We were lucky, it fits perfectly.

Everyone seems to love it. Everyone except my Mother-in-law who said, and I quote, "I don't get it!" LOL. Maybe she and The Fung Shui Master should hang out.
