Like the color but it looks cheap

Maybe it's the photo... I don't know. I tend to really like high-gloss red lacquer, so I'd think this was right up my alley. I think I'd like it more if it wasn't so reflective.

I like the concept but have to admit I've liked it more in smaller kitchen displays, where there are just enough cabinets to be a punch of dramatic red, rather than multiple walls of the color.

this might be better looking in smaller doses (it's a little overwhelming when it's the WHOLE kitchen). Also, not a fan of the black and red. Looks a little 80's/pizza shop.

All I can think of is how frustrating that would be to keep clean, as in smudge free. I have a tough enough time with stainless steel appliances!

Might be better if the surfaces were a little more even. These look like funhouse mirrors in hell.

I have a feeling this will look dated before its even finished being installed.

I agree. Smaller doses. But also mixed with high end elements.

I'm not a fan of design-statement kitchens. (I don't understand why so people want a housework area to be "the heart of the home" -- me, I'd rather be in the living room with books, music and cocktails instead of looking at my dishwasher). BUT...

I bet those Ikea components could make a FABULOUS wall unit in another room.

This is so 80's it's kind of funny. Seems like it's just missing a painting of an angular woman in black and white with red lips.

Cabinets are a big investment to risk a look that will probably be a fad. I don't see that extreme glossy red staying around long and it will devalue the kitchen at resale. Better stay with a more classic look that appeals to future buyers.

It's pretty...I'd like to visit it, but I don't think I'd want to live there.

I installed this in my kitchen about 2 yrs ago and am still in love -- but as recommended by the above posters, I used in relatively small quantities and mixed with higher end materials and appliances. The cabinets are a dead ringer for those featured in the red Poggenpohl kitchen -- several visitors have been surprised that they are Ikea. My countertop is cararra marble (not a very high grade, so not more expensive that other stones); instead of upper cabinets, I opted for 2 rows of gruntal shelves with very neat stacks of white dishes; remarkably, they have remained clutter free. Contrary to above assumptions, the cabinets are fairly smudge proof and not a 'pia' to clean as stainless steel -- my 2 kids under 6 have had ample oppurtunity to put that feature to the test.

I love my red abstrakt red (which is more raspberry than red); as I said, I still get a thrill from my kitchen.

White would be better, or white intermixed with smaller doses of red. Still pretty slick, tough!

I think this would look stunning with three modifications: 1) Integrated extruded aluminum handles on top/side of the cabinet doors/drawers; those powder-coated pulls look chintzy; 2) Use a different material for the island such as stainless or gray MDF; 3) white or stainless countertop.

I think this is a hate it or love it finish. I personally think its the most amazing kitchen they've at IKEA and it's not meant for the normal folk (regardless of whatever the catalog says). This finish is most suitable for someone who likes color, doesn't use the kitchen much, can afford a few thousand bucks on pretty, and doesn't mind stocking up on the optionals that really hike up the price but MAKE the kitchen (matching stainless, higher end lamps, maybe a maid to keep it all shiny?). I'm sorry for the people who say it looks too dated, or try to put it down, simply because it's a beautiful material to look at in person. It's yet ANOTHER option that you don't HAVE TO like. I've seen a few adds on Metro-Home with the exact same finish at a MUCH higher pricetag and I applaud IKEA for having the balls to carry a risky, yet beautiful design.

I am with Djluckyonline... well said! This is definately a love it or hate it look. Personally, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it! Sadly, this display kitchen is about half the size of my tiny apartment, but I can dream...

As for those that think it is dated, it's not... Take a look at any European kitchen showroom and you will find this compares quite well, for so very much less money.

In theory, I love the idea of red cabinets from Ikea. I just wish they weren't so glossy! I think they'd look less like they were covered in plastic wrap. I do love the color, though.

The surfaces are too uneven, and the edges shouldn't show white. It looks like a cheap knockoff of a modern European kitchen.

of course, that's exactly what it is, so that makes sense.

This is what Samantha had in Sex In The City. Her color was blue, but basically the same idea. I loved it then, and I love it now.

Ikea cabinets are cheap.

And you get what you pay for.

I like this look and the red and have seen these in person at my IKEA. However, I'd use them for the lower cabinets which would be largely all drawers, deep for most things and use smaller upper cabinets with unusual doors that either slide or raise up in a medium toned wood to off set but keep a modern sleek appearance.

But I'd not mate it to stainless appliances, that's becoming too cliche'd im my book

They have ones like this (or something like this) in blue, as mentioned up above. I think they're fantastic. Don't like it quite as much in red - a little too dramatic. Would be fine mixed with white or other elements, though.

And I agree these could look great in other rooms of the home, like the bath, or even the bedroom.

Consumer Reports has tested IKEA's cabinets, FWIW, and found them to be a very good value. They're higher quality than their price would indicate. Not incredible, but as durable as most and much less expensive, especially given the styles that are available.

It is ok in small doses.
