Hot or Not? Planika Coffee Fire Long

Planika's Coffee Fire Long, $2,495, features aluminum legs, oak veneer and a liquid fuel that is smoke- and odorless. Is it a coffee table? A fire pit? Something to avoid during a drunken night?

I have seen these in use and just want one so bad. Could sit there all night and watch the flames move.

Looks beautiful but probably not a great idea if you have kids or pets?

this is great. At our last house, my husband wanted a fireplace sooooo badly. I bought him one of those "burning log" dvds but it wasn't the same. :) This is a good way to (kind of) get the real thing.

I like it! You could roast marshmallows right on your couch.

That is really beautiful. Would it get hot, though?

Small pets, beware!

But how does it look without a fire going? Odd?

its just sterno. you can buy it at Vons and put some rocks in a vase and light it up. well there are probably a few more requirements than that but someone must have a DIY to quench the yearning for less then two grand?

Oh my...lovin it. It's so unique and so cool and I so miss my old gas fireplace. I have small pets but they are smart enough to know to stay away from anything emitting that kind of heat. But how would it look when it's not lit? I've found that many things that look great at night look awful with the lights up.

Wait....a DIY fix has been mentioned....I looked at the picture....then I looked at my Lack TV bench (the long one) and there is a striking similarity in overall design...of course running a hole through it will ruin all stability...but it's an idea if someone can hack it.

Lifestyle Shop on Spadina in Toronto carries this line of fireplaces. I think it's a great idea. They use corn oil instead of gas.

I have a 4 weeks old bunny plus a yorkie and a turtle. I'm afraid for the bunny because it's rambunctious and a baby. It's not that my babies are morons.

It's very pretty and would be great in a high-style condo -- but not in my house with toddlers and cats running around. It's not the most practical, really.
