We look for design ideas everywhere, and we've been known to sit through some bad movies just for the good decor. This year, couch potatoes and movie buffs who love design had a lot of options: 1950s executive style from Mad Men, luxury New York apartments from Sex and the City, and alternative ways of living from independent films like Surfwise. For the best big screen and small screen design of 2008, along with some classic sets that continue to inspire, jump below...

I loved the Cullen's house. And Edward.

I liked the home in "Far From Heaven," the movie with the still-oh-so-hot Dennis Quaid. Also, Zellweger and McGregor's apartments in the not so good "Down with Love" and William Holden's house (with Platner lounge chairs) in the Eastwood directed, somewhat tolerable film, "Breezy."

Devious bachelors always had cool places in the late 50s and early to mid 60s. And the Avengers was very hip and mod - I tried to make my old living room Peelesque.
Was it "The Long Walk Home" which had the fab 50s contemporary house in it?

"The Dreamers" by Bertolucci. Great interior shots of a Parisian apartment with all sorts of modern elements, even if the rooms themselves were a bit cluttered.

I've always loved the Bartel's house in "The Hand That Rocks the Cradle" :o)

ehy2k, I love Bertolucci's set designs! The Last Emperor was sumptuous and then there was Stealing Beauty, I just wanted to move there!
Two horror movies have pretty cool designs, and that was 13 Ghosts (the remake) and When a Stranger Calls (the remake). I don't quite remember The Hand that Rocks the Cradle, but I do remember the greenhouse was lovely!
Take care,
I.

Who makes the gorgeous wooden stool in the picture under the "Most Inspiring Set Design from TV Shows and Movies by Sarah C" heading?
It may be too short for our dining room table, but I am looking for a good stool where we are able to work and dine (ie. long spells of sitting).
Currently, I sit on an exercise ball so am looking for a comfortable stool rather than one purely focused on aesthetics. Any chance of finding both in one stool?
