CHI House Tour Roundup: Landing Strips

Homes are very personal, private spaces, which is why we're always grateful to AT:Chicago's House Tour participants for letting us take a peek inside. The mediator between that public and private space is the landing strip, the spot in a home where we meet the outside world and filter the junk: city grime, unwanted mail, and the odds and ends that we collect in our pockets. Some of our favorite house tours include beautiful and efficient landing strips that keep these homes healthy on a daily basis. More photos and links to tours below...

Everyone seems so much more organized then me. I live in a small apartment so the "entryway" is really where the living room and kitchen meet. Since there is a ledge on the kitchen counter right there we would throw keys, sunglass etc until you could no longer see the actual counter. To remedy that we took one of the sets with three hanging baskets and used the bottom one of keys. It hangs from the ceiling so even the lowest basket is above the counter and now we can keep our counter clean.

I know! I wish I had enough room for a formal landing strip. I've got a mail sorter and a coat rack. I put a mini landing strip in my bedroom - a little wire basket screwed into the doorframe: keys, wallet, and all my spare change. Now if only I were so organized about reciepts and other various bits of paper!

These people are ALL more organized than me too. But maybe that's because they are minimalists and don't have a job that requires them to shuffle a large number of things back and forth. I'm an English teacher, so I come home with a large plastic crate full of grading every night. I'd like to see something designed for someone like me, who has a lot of stuff on a daily basis. I have no idea what to do with it that's even remotely attractive...

Plus, I have a washer/dryer in my landing spot too. The "real" entrance to my house is through the laundry room, which is attached to the garage. Practically speaking, I'd like to see something done with a room like that.

Love the bench in Meg & John's strip. Looks like a very welcoming space.
