House Tour: Alex's Light-Filled Loft

10-01-07alex8.jpg

Name: Alex
Profession: Alex is a graphic designer and member of The Post Family.
Location: West Loop
Type: One-Room Loft
Years Lived In: 3 months

Clean and simple. Alex's West Loop loft is an understated tribute to mid-century modernism. It's also a tricked-out bachelor pad (with no big-screen TV or pool table in sight). As a typographer and one of the wunderkinds behind West Loop print shop The Post Family, Alex has an eye for good design.

Inside his airy loft, Alex has preserved a lot of breathing space. Filled with a few classic pieces and a little bit of bold color, his home is a testament to good editing. One indulgence - a collection of three bicycles.

Alex's Survey

my Style: Simple and warm.

the Inspiration: Mid-century design.

favorite Element: My sleeping loft is a childhood fantasy realized.

biggest Challenge: Finding someone to help build a cheap but nice ladder.

what Friends Say: They feel like they have gone back in time.

biggest Embarrassment: None.

proudest DIY: I wish I could take credit for my ladder. It's beautiful. Cost $10 and took 3 stained 2x4s and some screws. Making it wide just makes it look better. Props to Pedro.

biggest Indulgence: My DWR couch.

best Advice: Buy less, buy quality.

my Dream Source: Vitra Joyn.

Love this place. And a house tour after living there only three months? Awesome. Bonus points for listing Ikea for nearly every resource.

Alex, beautiful place, thanks for letting us see it!

I noticed you have the Bantam sofa from DWR. Have you been happy with it? I like it very much but have been nervous about buying a sofa with a single seat cushion, as the fabric tends to stretch and show wear faster than with multiple seat cushions. I noticed what looks like a little slackness in the sofa seat cushion in the overhead photograph of your living room. Am I misreading the photograph? How long have you had the sofa? Any info/advice you could provide would be extremely helpful.

Nice...I love how the clutter is controlled. I could learn a lot from studying his space.

Cool place. Lots of light. OK...but...the sofa is facing a wall. What up with that?

Beautiful place. Love the Eames shell chairs and the public display of bikes, I have three bikes publicly displayed as well. I'm curious, where'd you get the little tables with the eiffel bases?

Warm while still simple which is hard - great job. I wish there was a picture of your sleeping loft in there. I need ideas! How much head room to do you have up there? Is it enough?

I would also like to know what color/brand the green paint is!
