Name: Hal & Ed
Location: Edgewater
Size: 2400 sq. ft.
Years lived in: 4
Inspiration: We are not collectors, but rather are inpired by individual pieces, ideas, and memories. We only have things in our home that we truly enjoy.
Our style: Very eclectic with mid-century leanings.
Favorite room: The downstairs office that we just remodeled.
Most talked about element: The Kyle Staver painting in the dining room always gets people talking.
Most embarassing element: We love it, but the palm tree in our office is a little embarassing.
Proudest DIY: We are not the biggest DIYers, but two proud moments include re-grouting the bathroom and putting in twenty dimmer switches throughout the house.
Dream source: Wright Auction House.
Reality source: Broadway Antique Market.
Best advice: Put everything on dimmer switches! And don't be afraid of carpet...it's the best thing we did to the downstairs.
Found treasure: Tramp bottle cap chain-link art hanging in the living room.
Had forever: Ed's childhood bookcase; it still holds all of his childhood books.
Just got: We are so excited about our new Josef Albers silkscreen in the front hallway.
(Thanks, Hal & Ed!)
really, really nice.
i love the old portrait.
Oh if only the Broadway Antique Mart was my reality source!!
And oh to have 2400 sf again!!
Great space - love the exposed brick and windows - looks like a nice view with lots of green! Where did you get the rug under the master bed? this looks like a great place to entertain - if you do, I would get a bigger (not round?) dining table - not sure the one you have in there is working for me. Also, would love to see some club chairs or something in the library - although I love those wood chairs, they don't make we want to curl up with a book. Great place though and obviously a lot of love and your own styles went into it.
Nice place - it's like Iconic Chair Heaven.
Love the bookcase with all the children's books.
Nice... To have nearly five times the space that I now have.... I would get lost.
I'm lovin the black desk in the office...
Is the brick whitewashed, or is it just naturally light? I have exposed brick in my place and think it's too dark, but this is really nice.
It looks a bit too "showroom-y" for me.
Very nice! ...and yes, dimmers, dimmers, dimmers -- why don't people get this???
you guys have a nice style. it's clean, fairly manly, and flows really well. i like many of the wall decorations (the big ol' chain, the flock of birds downstairs). and, yes, the childhood bookcase rocks the house - never part with that.
I dig the dark baseboards- usually people try to eliminate or hide them in modern interiors but they really frame the spaces well.
This will be my imaginary apartment that I retreat to in my dreams! :) I love all the books and that your style is truly eclectic, but still works. It gives me hope that I too can combine all the styles of furniture I love!
I like everything but the rugs.
I, too, love Ed's bookcase -- I have the very same bookcase (well, not the very same one, obviously, but the same style) in my entry hall. Mine was my grandfather's, and is over 90 years old. If it is the very same style as mine, the coolest thing is that each shelf is a self-contained unit -- when you move it you can just take it apart. I think it's wonderful to have one's personal history in a treasure like Ed's bookcase! I like the rest of the apartment, too, but wonder how they keep it so gorgeous -- it looks as though no one really lives there.
I love that you guys included my painting in your story. Thank you for giving it such a spectacular home.
Much love,
Kyle
I gotta tell ya, I have looked at a lot of apartment designs trying to get some ideas and I think this is my favorite of probably 200 designs I have looked at. Great style, Where do you shop at the most?
