tour2009.jpgJane, her husband, and three children moved into their St. Henri home eight years ago. At the time, the building was made up of three apartments that were cut into cramped little rooms. The family lived on the third floor while renovating it and the first floor. When the second floor tenant's lease was up, they took to the whole building, creating their live-work dream with a home on the upper two floors and a studio, workshop, and gallery on the first...

Jane, an artist, and her husband, an investor who is also handy in his home workshop, did the great majority of the work themselves. Jane's work is displayed throughout the house, except for the small landscape painting in the dining room. After years of hard work the conversion continues, even while the family occupies their home.

AT Survey:

Favorite Element: The view from the deck.

Proudest DIY: The entire house, as the entire project is one big DIY.

Resources:

Kitchen: The entire (nearly new) kitchen was given to the family by a friend.

Hardware: Recovered from the original building and salvaged from off site.

Furniture: Antiques collected from local Montreal shops and from trips to France.

Window Treatments: Jane hand-stitched a delicate lace border onto the curtains over the kitchen sink.

Beds: Daughter's bed is an antique brought from France.

Artwork: Jane's own work.

OMG ... I am so jealous of all that space to collect and display all those wonderful things! I keep insisting that if I had enough space, my place would look just like this (and not cluttered and messy, the way it does now!) ... beautiful job!

This home is absolutely amazing. I am so inspired by everything in it, all the details, the amount of comfort and sun it seems to hold... I love it.

Definitely my favorite house tour. Not a hint of following trends, just beautiful and timeless furnishings and architecture. It actually looks like a home that's lived in, and lived in happily, not a curated exhibit.

More like this please!

This is such a lovingly restored home and so spacious. The furniture and Jane's paintings are beautiful.

Striking! I love it when a home becomes an ongoing art project, too. This family will never get bored.
