tour2009.jpgKathleen is currently working in the fashion world. As a director of copy and music for a major brand so she is constantly surrounded by all sorts of varying styles and trends. Yet, she is solid and sure of her own sense of style when it comes to decor - she loves the patina of age and the history inherent in vintage pieces and makes room for them in her home (and the homes of her clients, as she recently has added "designer" to her resume)...

Kathleen sent in these photos of the home she shares with Chet, an 1890's Cape Cod with two bedrooms. She's added her signature style to all of the rooms, even giving a sense of vintage glamour to the kitchen and baths, something that is not always easy to do. It's a warm and inviting space, with lots of interesting details to discover - enjoy the tour!

AT Survey:

Our style: Eclectic, inspired by our travels and items with a past

Inspiration: Magazines (I felt like someone had died when I heard Domino had published its last issue), Paris, my parents’ and uncle’s collections, Chet’s hometown of Istanbul

Favorite Element: The old pharmacy cabinet in the living room and the bathroom I redid

Biggest Challenge: Editing down my antiques collections, small closets

What Friends Say: “You should be an interior decorator/in a magazine”

Biggest Embarrassment: My windows are falling apart but I like rough-hewn and storied; it’s the antidote to clinical and bland

k3051109.jpg

Proudest DIY: The bathroom with my contractor Tim. It looked like something from an 80s porn movie before. I love the shelving and cabinets we created to hide pipes and the special little cabinet for the plunger. I also think the use of the oil-rubbed bronze is great and think chrome is so overused

Biggest Indulgence: I had to have even the plumbing behind the toilet and under the sink match the oil-rubbed bronze fixtures so ordered them from Italy

Best advice: Don’t try to force a style. I really love mid-century modern and respect that aesthetic more than my own but whenever I’ve tried to go there, I end up going back to my natural aesthetic and it looks forced; I just don’t have the patience for it. However, the exploration helped me update my style and become less “grandmother,” more “quirky.”

Also, if you’re not confident with color, stick to a neutral palette on the walls. There’s nothing worse than the wrong blue or turquoise on a wall. It can instantly cheapen a room. I know everyone says “experiment with color,” but I’ve seen some really horrible experiments!

I love how the house tells you something about the person that lives there. Too many houses have technically good decor, but it lacks personality. Congrats Kathleen and Chet- glad to see someone representing Columbus so well! :)

I like the way that the art occupies unusual spaces, low on the wall or halfway up the side of a staircase. I also applaud the very successful application of shabby chic in the bedroom - 90% of the time this style looks like crap.

Overall it's a little too theatrical for my taste, but it's beautifully done.

There is lot to love here, but the sinewy lamp with the shade that looks like an AT squiggle is seriously my favorite. Partly the shape, partly the gold inside, partly the silk and partly the piping. Probably also the way those materials interact with the shape.

OK, also, I'm not a serious cat person, but for some reason that lamp works with that cat queen picture really, really well.

Fabulous eclectic style. Columbus Ohio continues to put great style on the AT radar. (Scott's Carriage House went to finals in Small Cool this year.)

Your use of color and texture IS what makes you a modern girl. Every international magazine I pick up celebrates pattern mixing and richness and depth. It is so inspiring!

Thank you for including Collier West as one of your resources. I had forgotten about that lamp in your foyer. Mouthblown glass, but the shade is the icing on the top. You incorporated it into your space with precision!

Lovely. Lovely.

Oh! and that solution for accessories. Some of those "major fashion brands" work endlessly and spend wheelbarrows full of cash to create something so interesting, and effortless.

Brava!

Beautiful house, wonderfully creative! Reminds me of my Swiss neighbor's house growing up. She had a similar style, which is completely unique. Everywhere you look, you see yet another delightful piece or surprising accent. She had everything from antiques to original art to tapestry and oriental rugs. Yours is the first home tour I've seen that captures this mix of detail and style without being too overwhelmingly cluttered. Now when can I come over for chocolate torte? It is challenging, but keeping your collection under control really works for this place. You surely kept the best.

Viva to the Diva (and Divo)! Your place is wonderful and filled with lovely natural light right here in Columbus. I love the painted floors in the bedroom, something I have always wanted to do. As a self-professed Lighting Enthusiast, I seek out interesting and impressive lighting. Yours from top to bottom, side to side is the most amazing! What is that coffee table??? I am drooling....I want one. Great job!!

I enjoy your space very much. I think you're correct though about the need to edit just a wee bit. That birdcage for example is too tall for it's placement. It makes the staging all one level and fights with that gorgeous lamp IMO.

Hi everyone, thanks for your sweet comments. Suzi, I should have given you a bigger shout-out; your store is a constant inspiration. As for the Cat print, it's from Donald Roller Wilson, a NY transplant who lives in the town I grew up in: Fayetteville, AR, believe it or not, one of the most underrated cities in the world.
As for the chairs, I got them from a girl I work with who has great but different style and they just didn't work in her place.
As for the birdcage; I swear I tried many combos and this worked the best but if you could see how much my house has changed since even these photos were submitted (I was really urged by a great designer friend), you'd understand, one, how it keeps improving, and, two, that you are indeed correct, ma'am: I need to edit but I love to be around things I love. Am planning to move to a bigger house once we're married, so that will help.
As for the requests to decorate, I'd LOVE to help; just got my first two clients and I'm cheap cheap. Chocolate tortes are free though. Just let me know!

Oh, to answer two more questions: the dining room table is inherited (but I painted it to my mom's chagrin), the dining room chairs are Sundance catalog, the coffee table (the best photo of it they didn't post but they did a great job!) is from an antique mall near Amish country; a great find, only 75 bucks. The guest bed was found in an abandoned warehouse; I paid a ton to make it queen though. Weirdly enough though, I pay really little for my interiors. I pay more for clothes; ugh. Okay thanks everyone for your very nice comments.

This looks much different than my last visit. There was a lot going on at the time. You've done a very nice job with your edits (why wasn't I called to take a few of those edited pieces off your hands!! lol). It's very lovely!

Also, those chairs look amazing!!!! :-)

I have known this gal all of her life! Yep, I am the proud mama. When she was four, she had style! She talked about her wedding (remember, 4 years old) and said that all her attendants would wear BLACK! years before that became chic. And, begrudingly, I admit, the kitchen table looks good painted! ( Oh those hours I spent removing old green paint from it!) Congratulations, daughter, on great taste and the ability to take something mundane and make it something special.

Oh to get to this point! I would like to someday sit comfortably in "quirky, not grandma". This house will be an inspiration. Charming, cozy, and I would spend hours in that living room.
So nice to see something "modern" that respects the history of items without completely reproducing an historical look ala a house museum.

There is a lot going on in this house. (I'm sure some will say too much.) But I think that in this instance all of the art and travel souvenirs and furniture achieve the effect of a cohesive look that really exudes personality and character. I bet visitors lose time just peeking at all of the interesting items everywhere. This isn't my style, but man, oh man, I really like this house tour. If I could pull this look off half as well, I would. It is SUCH a cool place. Well done, you two.

Quirky, colorful and definitely over the top (for me, anyway). Great eye for "merchandising." Love the bathrooms the most.

I so admire this style, but don't have the talent or the patience to make it come together. I much prefer less "cluttered" spaces because they are easier to keep clean (for me, anyway.)

Congrats.

The painting of the woman on the dresser in k15 - looks exactly like it's of my old roommate, an artist with the initials A.F. - do you know who it is in the painting or am I just crazy?

Yesterday, a friend and I were saying how since childhood we'd each wished for bedrooms that were tucked away in little nooks and had that cozy feel.

I read a ton of blogs and magazines and your house tour had me wanting to jump into the photos and move right into your bedroom (master or guest room) and the dressing area. Well done!

I liked the white brick wall, the shabby chic white table, and the Venetian mirror. Very beautiful.

Antlers, oh dear God, no. Empty picture frames, a close second.

In my view, the collection could be pared down to even greater effect.

Less is more.

Gotta Disagree with you there Austin Sarah, you're gettin' all taste police on Kathleens home. It's beautiful and one of the house tours that really inspires. I really delight in the diversity of homes on Apartment Therapy. Kathleen made a very good point about mid-century modern. It will just never sit right with some people because it's not they're style, it just doesn't come out of them when they put their homes together.

Some folk love clutter and bric-a-brac, some don't, it's beyond taste... it just is. Like for example, I'll just never get country and western music...
