Back in October, Kelly Edwards let us investigate her home for a Time Out article seeking to compare on-screen local TV folks with their at-home style (we also covered WTTW's Phil Ponce). Knowing that Time Out would only show a small glimpse, we took some photos for AT (one of Kelly's favorite resources, she says, for her Design on a Dime ideas and inspiration)...

Kelly admits to a lot of leaning objects and temporary design solutions - her self-described Libra tendencies have her avoiding permanent design choices. What you'll find are a lot of leaning pieces of artwork; a giant leaning mirror; pillows and blankets that shift from place to place; simple, uncommitted walls. Kelly's most prized possession is the "steak" coffee table (named by her friend, Critter) that she pulled from a neighborhood curb years ago.
Kelly and Brian have since moved back to Los Angeles after three years in Bucktown (we caught them right as they were starting to pack, so...no shots of the bedroom piled with boxes), and we look forward to seeing their LA place one of these days.
Our style: Classically eclectic?
Inspiration: Design magazines and thrift stores
Favorite Element: My coffee table for sure!
Biggest Challenge: Convincing my boyfriend that the coffee table was a really cool piece and we had to keep it no matter what!
What Friends Say: ? I guess I never asked them.
Proudest DIY: My dining chairs that I garbage picked and refurbished just hours before going on the news with them.
Biggest Indulgence: The sofa and chair. It’s the only thing in our house that we purchased at full price.
Best advice: Your home is like an outfit. If you're not happy with it or comfortable in it, it’ll show. Design your home so you're comfortable in it. Don’t worry what everyone else is doing. If you love it, that’s all that matters.
Dream source: Anywhere I can find warm and cozy things with character.

We most love the windows looking out at the brick wall. Such a lovely view in our opinion!

I love the open living, dining and kitchen space. The brick with the dark floors is gorgeous. The weight and scale of your furniture really works in this space.

This is such a slim "house" tour! Where's the bedroom? It leaves me wanting more. maybe I'm just nosy :)

i LOVE the hardwood floors! did you refinish them? if so, what stain was used? what species of wood is it - oak?

I like the tiles in the bathroom.....beyond that, seems a to have the 'dull catalog syndrome'

I disagree with you starckmad2. I don't find this home dull at all.

Lovely.

A bit disappointing for someone who hosts a "design" show on television.

I love it. I have a weakness for brick walls and hardwood floors. I'm drooling.

i can't believe that massive piece of wood table is a curbside find! it's a gem designed by nature.

I love the dark bench white chair dining table combination! it feels somehow airy and slim.
And being a Leo, i'm desperatly trying to lean art against the walls. Hopefully I will learn from your pictures...

Yeah I was clicking through and thought I'd be wowed when I saw the red door (which is pretty awesome), but most of the pics were pretty generic. The bathroom perked me up. I love the penny tiles, especillay in that color. The wall color is nice and the floors are cool. It's a large space, but manages to still feel warm. It's good design, but nothing really extraordinary.

Pure vanilla --- boring, yet classic. Too safe to be really interesting.

The apartment is impressive while at the same time it really gets under my skin. I like the attractive and cozy design, but the lot line windows and minimalism repulse me. Though the apartment has abundant handsome exposed brickwork, windows facing a brick wall are not attractive no matter how handsome the brick and woodwork surrounding them. The apartment appears devoid of personality, it's as though HGTV's "Designed to Sell" visited and forced the couple to expel all the personality and maybe some furniture from their home. Are the missing elements of personality hiding in the omitted bedroom? Is the place for sale?
Being an artist, I will never accept the disparaging current fad of leaning artwork and mirrors against walls instead of hanging them. I also don't get the postage stamp rug beneath the impressive cocktail table nor the floor pillow seating on bare floors. This space is so minimalist, it begs the question: Do these people live in this apartment or is it living space as art installation?

I'm pretty sure those dining benches are from World Market's Sourav collection--great juxtaposition with the chairs. I love that opening photo--I need those pillows!

It's a bit too vanilla for my tastes. I do like the red door and the 'pull' sign on it.

I think its lovely. My home is very neutral as well. My taste is very modern and simple. I design hotels for a chain that is very traditional and we use many patterns. It can be design overload. Coming home to vanilla is just right for me.

Could you please share where those tan pillows with the red Welsh looking dragons are from? I looked at Jayson but didn't see them...oh woe if they are no longer available...! Lovely home!

not sure she should be charged with doing people's homes. not the best tour. sorry.

as mentioned above, Kelly and Brian were in the midst of moving when this tour was done (hence, no bedroom shots). there was a lot left to see so we wanted to capture what we could of the last days of their Chicago apartment...
thanks, All!

It's a nice house, but very generic and predictable. It reminds me of staged houses in new construction developments.

it IS a rental, so maybe they are not allowed to paint the walls. the pale colors allow for what natural light they do receive to sine all the way through the space.
the red door is great. also, the lamp on the kitchen counter is a nice touch, more warmth than overhead lighting, more interesting than a floor lamp.

Where are those awesome white moroccan-ish urns from?

I was wondering about the urns too. They are pretty.

I can't imagine why Kelly would ever let AT into her new home in LA after all the nasty claws-out comments! Thank you for letting us into your home.
