Name: Kim
Location: Evanston
Size/Type: 3500 sq ft house
Years Lived In: 5
This is AT:Chicago's first suburban House Tour. Kim was initially excited to give us a "garden tour," and we are so happy that she extended the glimpse to inside her colorful home as well. While not a full house tour, we enter here from the garden into the dining room for a bit of Evanston charm. There is much inspiration to be taken from Kim's color choices, outdoor living, and attention to detail. We wish we could have been there for the photoshoot to experience it all firsthand!

Lovely home. Especially love the upholstered chair. Is that from the furniture company mentioned above? Thanks for sharing.

I love the photo of the toys on the shelf - great colors and great photography. This is a pretty huge house - while I understand that this is all about design, isn't this getting a bit far from the "Apartment" in AT?

We're possibly moving to Evanston. What's it like? Are there smaller, more affordable areas still close to the university?

Juliejulie,
your point is a discussion we've seen endure on AT, and we agree that the "apartment" aspect (and how to live efficiently) should never be lost. however, we like to cover the spectrum: to show high end/low end design, large/small spaces, and everything in between. the idea is that inspiration, ideas, and discussion can stem from everywhere. We even did a tour of The Wo Hing Society in Maui last year (certainly not an apartment or a small space), another example of how we don't like to limit ourselves or what we see as useful and beautiful - or limit what we explore and present on the site.

I was thinking the same thing, Juliejulie, especially in regards to Maxwell's 'green' perspective that is now officially showing up in AT's pages. Heather, while lovely, this is more fitting in Better Homes and Gardens' pages. Just my two cents' worth... :)

Yes, this seems to be way off the mark for this site. I agree with JulieJulie. I enjoy seeing the tips for small spaces. There are plenty of other sites for large spaces.

I'm with Juliejulie as well. There seem to be endless home design resources out there for those with money and space. Of course inspiration can be found everywhere, but AT is great for finding it in slightly more obscure or challenging situations...

I wasn't overwhelmed by the tour. I agree that insight and inspiration can come from just about anywhere, but I got neither from the tour. Small spaces offer unique ways to deal with limitations. Working within the boundries of small budgets show that imagination and a DIY spirit can work wonders. While touring this large space, I kept looking for the unique solution, the interesting mix, the DIY ideal. All I got was that folks with larger spaces and more means can do some really nice things. Duh. Bummed.

I like the fact of the tour, even though it's far larger than my house.

Ifw1031 Ditto. Is this thing even an apartment? (Does it matter?)

Evanston may be a suburb of Chicago, but there are plenty of examples of interesting apartments, which I think is one of the greatest things about that city-- it's got a density that most suburbs lack, but folks who want 3500 sq ft houses can find what they want as well. I went to school there and lived in an amazing flat with 4 of my good friends. While our decor was retread from the yearly moving turnover, I have friends still there that have done great things with small spaces. And there's plenty of new condos available for purchase.

I really enjoyed this tour, and it doesn't bother me that it's a house. I love to see what "real" people do with their spaces, regardless of the size or hypothetical income level. For me, it's about what you can do with what you have. I think AT addresses this quite well across the spectrum. I see no need to drage the have/have-not issue in. There are some outrageously expensive apartments out there that are very ugly, so as long as AT's main focus is the aesthetic and domestic appeal of the city dweller's space, I'm ok with an occasional foray into suburbia. Thanks for a really nice tour.

I agree with ClaraE.
I think of AT as a place to be inspired by peoples homes, not just small spaces. I live in a row-home in Philadelphia that is probably smaller than most apartments and I get a lot from AT.
I really enjoyed seeing the layout of this space- It only showed a Living room, dinning room and backyard and I wouldn't call it big at all really. I have seen larger apartment tours on here.
I think this tour showcased beauty, contrast and a home. That is what matters to me.
Lovely tour!

Lovely Home! The dining room color is to die floor! Would you be kind enough to share the color with us as I sooooooooooooooo want to use that color in my house.
You know a lot of us may end up in suburbia for one reason or another, so I think it's great to foray into the burbs sometimes.
And fun to oggle over the idea of a yard!
please :>))))))))))))) share paint color of dining room!
Thanks!

Ringo, I live west of Ridge, near Davis, and it's walking distance/biking distance from the University. Lovely area! Lots of parks; I do all my grocery shopping and errands by foot, and the Metra (at Davis and Maple) gets me to my job in the Loop in twenty minutes. It's a crazy good life up here. I don't miss the city at all.
