Lindsay is not only new to her West Loop loft, she's new to the business of interior decorating (www.lindsaysegal.com). At home, she practices what she preaches about the importance and fun that go hand-in-hand with decorating on a budget. The thrill of the hunt, the pride of DIY, and the ambition of quirky additions and colorful vintage collections are all at the core of Lindsay's work and design mantra: anyone can do budget-friendly in style.

Although a rental, Lindsay got lucky with a landlord who's comfortable with her experimentation. From the living room's neutral gray that serves as a backdrop for her bright accessories to the bedrooms single (yet powerful) yellow wall, Lindsay painted all of this on her own. Even the horizontal black and white stripes in the entry served as the ultimate DIY and lesson in perfection (and how to perfect the process next time around). From beginning to end, Lindsay believes in the power of creating a color story and sticking to it. She knew the colors she desired and how she wanted the space to feel. Her advice: "Love walking through your front door!" Read on...

AT Survey:
My style: Collection of retro-modern, vintage and pop
Inspiration: In the words of Jonathan Adler, “Minimalism is a bummer and color can’t clash!”
Favorite Element: Robot and plate collections
Biggest Challenge: Hanging the vintage birdcage. After my first attempt, it fell off the wall because I didn’t use heavy enough anchors. Luckily, the paper mache bird was not hurt!
What Friends Say: Your house is the perfect combination of kitsch and cool. How do you make your weird collections look so awesome?
Biggest Embarrassment: The absence of a dining set, or anything for that matter, on the balcony. The balcony is huge and would be a great space to utilize if I could commit to buying patio furniture.
Proudest DIY: Painting horizontal stripes on the foyer wall. I thought this would be no big deal after I taped off the stripes. Not as easy as I'd thought: The paint seeped through the tape and the stripes came out wavy! I spent the next 12 hours with a ruler and artist’s paintbrush touching up the stripes until they were straight.
Biggest Indulgence: The Crate and Barrel Petrie sofa. I had been obsessed with this retro-modern sofa for years and I thought it was time to make an upgrade from the Ikea Klippan couch I had in my first apartment.
Best advice: Love walking through your front door! My place is a collection of things that I love and make me happy every time I look at them. I don't buy pieces because they fit within my home, but because they stand out -- every piece has a detail that sets it apart and reflects my personality. Building your home around collections makes the space memorable, playful and personal.
Dream source: I wish I could afford some of the fabulous vintage pieces from Mongo Home, Architectural Artifacts and Broadway Antiques. I almost blew my savings on a 1960’s Torino robot lamp from the store Revival last summer, but my boyfriend hid my wallet.

Resources: Though it may not look like it, my house really was designed on a budget. Budget concerns come up frequently when working with clients. It's a fun challenge to find inexpensive pieces that still pack a punch. The resources I used most often were Ikea, CB2, Jonathan Adler and White on White. Almost all of my accessories are antique or vintage and came from Edgewater Antiques or various antique stores in Gurnee, IL or New Buffalo, MI. With the exception of a few pieces, most of my art is pulled from either magazines or art books. Although I love building collections over time, I find that pulling pages is a great, inexpensive way to fill up picture frames fast.

You have an amazing eye for accessories and your staging is absolutely fabulous. I love how you've been able to mix patterns without it seeming too kitschy or ethnic or theme-y. To me, that is a really hard thing to do well, especially within the context of modern.
I think the birdcage needs to be amped up a bit because I love it but it's getting kind of lost for me...maybe mount a medallion or something bright on the wall behind it and mount the bracket to that, or put a bold frame around it? And a bigger rug under the dining table. Other than that, completely, utterly perfect.

You've inspired me and given me some new ideas to turn my house from drab to fab! Thank you for sharing.

PhillyLass:
I just had this term defined for me during my loft search in LA. As it turns out, there are 2 types of loft spaces: hard lofts and soft lofts.
A hard loft will be a pure industrial space likely with original concrete walls, floors, and industrial ceilings. These are usually converted factory/industrial buildings.
A soft loft will usually be in a residential setting, and will have more cozy features such as: wood/carpet flooring, stucco/drywall, crown moulding ect. You still get the open loft layout but a bit less of the industrial feel.
That said, I love Lindsay's space. I think she has done a fantastic job of blending old and new, and modern and traditional, to create a unique home.

Divine Miss Linds -
Your apartment is as full of life as you are!
I love, well first of all I love the sheer size of your place and the view is nothing to sneeze at either, but I digress. The mixtures of pattern in the l/r give a great pop to the cool walls and couch, the plates are a wonderful antique-ish contrast to all the mod in the diningroom, your yellow wall in the b/r is just the Sha-Zam! we all need in the morning, and having spent 12 hours hand-stenciling my own foyer, I feel your pain re: the stripes, though they were well worth it!

I've been thinking about getting that same ikea bed and headboard for our bedroom because of the storage the bed has, are the drawers spacious? my husband and i would use for socks blankets ect. P.S. I'm loving that bird cage!!

Your place is beautiful! I love it. I really like your odd items strewn about the great design pieces. That mirror is great, too! I have been in love with a similar one from World Market for some time now...I should just get it already!
Which antique shops did you hit up in Gurnee? I visit the area pretty frequently (i grew up 10 miles away from gurnee) and I'm always looking for new places to check out.

Love love love love love. Thanks for sharing your beautiful home and your great taste and aesthetic. You have a lovely sense of humor and a great sense of style. Very unique and interesting. I am going to totally rip off some of your ideas! Yup. Shameless plagiarism. My favorites: the black and white stripe wall (of course), the plates juxtaposed with the sputnik, the couch scaping, and the yellow wall. Simple but so beautiful. Kudos Lindsay.

Wow, gorgeous. So many things to like: the collection of plates next to the dinner table, which echoes the shapes of the light fixture; the robots over the kitchen sink; the way the corner lamp in the bedroom is so unassuming; the headboard. Nice job.

Thanks for all the great feedback!
Susang: The console is from Room & Board.
Splatgirl: Thanks for that advice- I have been thinking about adding a splash of color to a vintage frame and framing the bird cage!
SerialSquares: The camera I used to photograph is a Leica V-Lux 1. It is amazing!
Plastolux: The throw is the NIXON throw from Jonathan Adler. Very comfortable!
StephM: The art over my couch is from Art.com. It is a Lichtenstein print. The piece over my TV is a vintage print I bought at Edgewater Antiques from 1970. These are my few exceptions to pulling pictures from books!
Puddin Pop: I use the 4 drawers for socks/towels/linens. It is a perfect amount of storage for these items.
Erin Lang Norris: My favorite shop is the Gurnee Antique Market- it's huge!
Wendy J: I would love to style your home! Check out my website for my contact info.

Lindsay, I love your apartment!
I painted horizontal stripes in my living room and received a great tip that cut the work time in half.
If you put your tape up and paint the base color (in your case white?) over the tape, then allow that to dry. This will seal the tape edges and you come out with crisper and cleaner lines after you paint the stripe color in!

Im hooked to this comment list, waiting for any information on the man-stabbed-w-knives holder! It's a hilarious item and I also would love to know where can one get this???

I have the same pink robot! He looks great with buddies; reminds me of the animated film "Robots" that came out in 2004/05. Have you seen it?
In terms of lovely, related but varying elements, though, I have to comment on your plate collection hung alongside the dining area's mod light fixture. How bold and brilliant to mix similar shapes (the round plates and spherical light orbs) with asymmetrical presentation and totally opposite styles (bohemian grandmother vs space-age modern). Well photographed!

(Only little criticism: the rug under your dining table it too small.)

Where is the bird on the table from? He's so fat and cute:) I'm doing my guest bedroom in a birdcage theme with red yellow black and white. Also- did you paper maiche your own bird? That has potential for me, but not sure how I'd get a bird shape- I'm not too talented:)
view jocasta02's profile
A little trick I read for painting stripes. Tape off the areas you want to remain as they are, then paint across the edges of the tape with the ORIGINAL color. That seals the edges, so the new color doesn't seep under. :-)
