Size/Type: 2800 sq/ft townhome
Years lived in: 3 years
Meg and John made the move from a loft to a townhouse a few years ago. Spreading out (and up!) meant plenty of room for this creative couple to experiment with their style; an ever-evolving beautiful mix of high and low, new and used. We had the pleasure of spending a sunny Sunday taking photos of their city home and it is as warm and welcoming as any we've been in.
The use of white throughout is a natural unifying factor, but it shifts subtly from room to room. It's a high contrast to dark brown walls in the office, an overall warm glow in the living and dining area and a soft blend with the cooler colors of the bedroom.
More photos, survey and resources below the jump:
Clever details abound, such as the glass hearth in front of the fireplace (back-painted with white for a glossy clean look) and the extra built-in kitchen work and storage space hidden in the pantry - just two of many ideas from Meg and John's place to add to your style tray. Enjoy the tour!

Meg and John's Survey:
our Style: Warm Modern
the Inspiration : Met Home, Domino, AT, The Healthy Home by Jackie Craven
favorite Element: Our rooftop in the summer is by far my most favorite place to be. We can escape the noises of the city and just relax.
biggest Challenge : I am sure AT readers can relate to this oneā¦..what to do with the cat box!?
what Friends Say: "What is different this time?" I have a habit of changing my surroundings until I strike the right balance. I am always rearranging and editing.
biggest Embarrassment: Our living room sectional has seen many parties, 2 moves, one growing puppy, a lazy cat and 2 adults who like to lounge. It has clearly seen better days. But hopefully our embarrassment will soon be a showpiece. It will be covered in a custom/tailored slipcover in a mushroom/fawn colored microsuede. This turned out to be a much more affordable option than reupholstering the entire piece.
proudest DIY: Our pantry build-out. It used to be outfitted with builder-grade wire shelves that wouldn't allow canned foods to stand upright. Cooking and organizing was a frustrating experience. We decided to install base cabinets, a countertop and solid shelving. Much better!
biggest Indulgence: Floor to ceiling sheers in our family room
best Advice: Edit.

Excuse me, I think you're living inside my dream home.

Oh my, this house is drop dead gorgeous. Serene, sophisticated ... I love it. I think they found the perfect balance of contemporary and classic. The result is utterly graceful and very glamorous. I'm going to refer back frequently for inspiration. Well done!

Interesting. When I was married I lived in a house that was basically all white. I always wanted to paint. He didn't.
Have had two homes since my divorce. Each home has had more and more elements of color thrown in.
This is a beautiful home but initially the all white was a tad jarring. The kitchen is warm and lovely and I absolutely LOVE the rooftop deck.
Truly, a beautiful home....just not as much color as I am used to seeing on A/T :-)

What a beautiful home. At first I assumed the color scheme would make the place cold, but it actually seems pretty inviting. I have to say though, that the apartment seems completely implausible for a family with children. Just visiting there with a kid would make me incredibly stressed out!

This is stunning and I love to see things from Room and Board, craigslist, etc mixed in with more expensive pieces.

You have a beautiful home! Where is your rooftop furniture from?

Echoing what others are saying - the space is beautiful, sophisticaed, not overly cluttered - very clean feel, but still gives a feeling of warmth. Inspiring!

Very nice. Clean and Elegant. I'm curious about the dinner table - where is it from?

GORGEOUS! Love it. Excellent use of white & neutrals.
I'm about to completely renovate my pantry (presently gutted to the studs), so it's great to see your build-out. I'm inspired!

Thank you for all the very nice comments! You all are so generous.
KathinCO - I hear you. I am a color person, too. I like all kinds - vibrant, neutral, offbeat. I get my color fix from paintings. I found that when I would paint a room orange, I would be sick of it next week. So now all my color goes onto the canvas, then hung on the wall, then moved when I am over it.
j i - the rooftop furniture is from Kingsley Bate. We got it from a club-type store, but you can see it online at allmodernfurniture.com. The style is called Amalfi. It's really nice deep seating.
southernwayfarer - the dining table is from Pine and Design (north ave, chicago), which is now out of business. Several years ago, we searched for months for a rustic, "Thanksgiving" style table before finding this one. Now, there seems to be more options out there. If we didn't already have this one, I probably would go for the Big Sur from Crate and Barrel.
SFGall - LOL! Well, we'll learn quickly. We are expecting our first child. So far, it looks like we have planned a good mix, knowing all along we would be starting a family. We have quite a busy household already ~ 1 dog, 1 cat and many guests under the age of 2. The cowhide rug in the LR, is totally amazing. Grape juice just wicks right off (it is hair afterall). The barcelona and buttercup are also favorites among our kiddo friends. Slipcovers just toss right in the wash and most other surfaces are wipeable. Wish us luck! I am sure we will be fine tuning along the way.
itsthehouseshow - I wish it looked like that everyday! Glad you noticed.

Meg and John,
Let me just say if I ever own a house, I want it to look like yours does. Absolutely stunning! The lack of color doesn't bother me at all. It looks inviting nevertheless. The lamps in the Master Bedroom are awsome and so are the side tables. What a great mix of the eclectic and the modern! I have bookmarked your house for inspiration. Great job!

In an all white/neutral color scheme, texture is essential. You have done a great job of bringing in a variety of textures into what could be a very sterile environment. This feels warm and inviting. I just want to come in and touch everything!

it's truely beautiful...it has reinvigorated me to buy a barcelona chair in white (well an imitation...i don't have the money for an original) and reconsider my dark chocolate couch idea and head back into the lighter beige tones ....im so nervious of clumsiness :)...but your talk of lasting through puppy training and festive lifestyle with your light colored couch makes me hopeful :)....the whole place is lovely on the whole though...i covet almost every inch!

Love the place. I'd be more than happy to move in :) Where are the chairs on the roof from?

Even tough many people already did comment, I had to say it : it's beautiful, inviting and the perfect use of neutral, love it!!

I think an all white house requires more creativity and thought than a house that's splattered with color.
I am a huge fan of white, however, whenever I do it, it ends up looking blah and washed out. I love how you've taken white and neutrals to the next level. Really really stunning. Come do my house!!!

Noah, Meg mentioned earlier in the comments that the rooftop furniture is from Kingsley Bate available on allmodernfurniture.com. : )

Meg we live in a 1250sq ft apartment in Hong Kong with a similar colour scheme to you (although still very much a work in progress). We have 3 children under 4.5 and in some ways I think it is easier than a dark colour scheme. My nanny has invited 22 kids for play dates (plus one nanny per child), lots of people and our apartment has survived!

Pixie - we have the cat box in a storage closet. We lined the carpeted floor with a plastic runner from home depot and cut it to size. For the actual cat box, we used a large shallow rubbermaid bin. So far it has worked, but we need to find a new spot for it. I would love to put in the negative space under the staircase but it would require cutting through drywall. Scary!

HK in HK! wow, 22 kids! Any house would be lucky to survive. :)

II - as nazrd commented, varying the textures is key in a monochromatic color palette (whether it be all red or all white). So yes, I agree you have to really dig deep to find creative ways to keep things interesting and inspired.
For me, it also takes a lot of discipline to stick to a plan and not fall head over heels for every new cool product or catalog spread.

I'm printing out the frames to replicate in my Miami condo. The color scheme is very South Florida.

What an inspiration! So peaceful. I especially love the bedrooms. I saw the duvets are from Area. Which style is on each bed and what are the colors? I may have to copy them. :) Thanks!

meg,
i read ur advice too late. i painted a wall in "that green" that was really popular last season and now i'm growing tired of it. i wish i had just brought in the color on canvas rather than painting the wall. i'm going to repaint the wall a more neutral color when i can find the time. thanks for sharing!

I've been looking for window treatments (ripple fold) in my brand new condo. The sheers in your family room look like exactly what I'm looking for. Where did you get them, especially the bi-fold colors? And have they been practical in terms of filtering out light, etc.? Thanks in advance for your reply.

I would be curious to know if - once you have a baby - if the white still works for your life or not. I now have a 2 year old and I'm not sure if dark or light is better!
More importantly - where did you get the shelving in the office?
