House Tour: Meg and Ross' Life in Logan Square

2008-01-17breakfast.jpg

Names: Meg and Ross
Location: Logan Square, Chicago
Size: 800 sq. feet
Years lived in: 1

Meg and Ross live in Logan Square and were scouted out by Evan who photographed their cozy apartment for AT. We were impressed with the clever details throughout that accomplish exactly what Meg listed in their survey as their biggest design challenge - giving a gut rehab real character. We think this home has character and style to spare! Details like the photo mural, the dressed up IKEA armoire and well chosen vintage pieces take things very far from cookie-cutter.

We agree with Meg's thoughts on small space living (everything is close by and cleaning is a breeze), but have to say, their home doesn't read as a small space - the feel is light and spacious, thanks to a job well done by a couple clearly interested in good design. Take a look below for more photos, the survey and all the resources:

Meg and Ross' Survey:

my Style: I'm a modernist at heart but wanted the place to look lived-in and comfortable. At the moment I'm into the warm colors of the 70s, as well as the 1980s take on art deco, mirrored surfaces, Lucite and all around colorful excess. It gets a little scary though when I start to decorate the way I dress, "ooh I should try to pull off that shiny gold curtain to divide up this room!"

favorite Element: It's two-room living- nothing's ever far away (and there's not much to clean)! I like to pretend we live in Tokyo.

the Inspiration for our home: I like modernism throughout the ages, and Ross wants to live in an apartment inspired by Dario Argento's Tenebrae.

biggest Challenge : Trying to make gut rehab have any character at all is quite a challenge. It's also hard to decide which ideas to execute since we don't have much room to experiment. It forces me to be more flexible.

what Friends Say: "It's cozy." Or "When's the next Korean BBQ night?"

biggest Embarrassment: The exposed brick is a little gimmicky but adds a nice historical element. Ross wants to add some custom neon from that shop on Western.

proudest DIY: Copying Todd Oldham's wood contact paper idea on my Ikea armoire (in 45 minutes!).

biggest Indulgence: 70s modern ceiling lamp from the Edgewater Antique Mall. Next up: subway tile backsplash in the kitchen.

best Advice: I read somewhere that if your place is small it's especially important to 1. get rid of everything but the essentials and, 2. avoid lots of different kinds of storage. Dedicate an area, floor to ceiling, to one dramatic idea.

Resources:

Appliances
The appliances are Frigidaire and came with the place. Though I once bought an adorable 1950s olive green gas stove from a Mike's used appliances on Ashland & Division.
Also, there's no reason for a one-bedroom apartment to have a full-size fridge!

Hardware
I love the kitchen cabinets. They're simple and panel-less, which is unbelievably hard to find in condos these days. The cabinet pulls are Ikea.

Before buying, our Realtor negotiated a $450 lighting allowance for us since the model's frosted glass and brass Home Depot fixtures were just not gonna cut it.

Furniture, Lighting & Artwork by Room

I love this place! Loads of personality and personal touches. I like the look of the red filing cabinet next to your kitchen; I've been looking for some storage in our kitchen/hallway area...

I LOVE when people have art in their closets! My FAVORITE thing to do! Too bad my current apartment has two very small very narrow closets...

Really love the shots in the bedroom. What is the cute little white ceramic piece in the window - and where may I find one? Nice job!

Great place! Very warm, cozy and modern! I totally love your Todd Oldham-ized amoire!!!

Oh and I concur with you about finding a new gut-rehab with panel-less doors. My husband and I spent the better part of last year condo-hunting and I think we only saw two places with the panel-less option. Drove me nuts!

Meg and Ross, you've really made your place a home since the last time I've been over. The style totally reflects your personalities: fun, creative, a little 80's vintage. I'll have to walk over to the next block and visit you 2 soon! Congrats and nice job~

A can of spray paint can really spruce up an old blah-colored filing cabinet. I recently painted mine blue, but I'm now thinking my boyfriend was right and we should have used red!

I love your place. Very cool without looking like a showroom. Can you tell us where you got those orange hooks your keys are hanging on? I've gotta have them!

The space feels very comfortable. I think the wall paper is a really nice touch. The red file cabinet and runner in the kitchen is a cool, stylistic touch!

sarah nin: the hooks are from the Chicago Architecture Foundation Store at 224 S. Michigan.

and oh-
oklagirl: i realized you were talking about the little white fat cat thing in the window of the bedroom- that's a stuffed animal i've had since i was a kid.

In the kitchen shot, it looks like you used maps for window coverings--is that correct? Or is it fabric. Either way it's cool--I'd love to know how it was done.

Hey! Great space...and I could swear our cats our cousins.
Question: I checked on CB2, but the chrome lights you have in the kitchen aren't produced anymore. Anyone know of something similar for a reasonable price? Thanks!

Somehow I missed that Todd Oldham tip. Genius, and you interpreted it very nicely. My favorite part of an apartment filled with lovely touches.
