House Tour: The Fahden's Clearly Clean & Simple

tour2009.jpg Before moving just 3 small months ago, Jack and Carla Fahden spent their spare time digging through home decor magazines, websites, and homes on TV and in movies. After months of collecting items and purchasing furniture in advance, they finally moved in and got to see the fruits of their labor quickly come together...

In the Fahden household, Jack likes modern and Carla leans towards mixing and matching styles and trends, but they have reached a great compromise by keeping things clean and simple, allowing both of their tastes to shine through.
One of the most difficult things to do with a small space (although some might argue 2,000sqft isn't small, in the Midwest it tends to be labeled as such) is to make your surroundings feel cozy without feeling overwhelming. The Fahdens have used a brilliant mix of light and dark colors that allow their art work and personalities shine through in the details. The resulting home makes this a perfect retreat from the busy life of living near the Twin Cities. The slideshow will show you just how cozy clean and simple really can be!

AT Survey:

Our Style: Eclectic but modern and clean.

Inspiration: Magazines, homes in the movies, Domino decorating book.

Favorite Element: White bed from Crate and Barrel.

Favorite Room: Guest bedroom. It reminds us of all of the friends and family who have stayed with us so far.

Biggest Challenge: Painting with dark dramatic colors. We were afraid the rooms would turn out gloomy or drab.

What Friends Say: They were impressed by how quickly we got settled in.

Biggest Embarrassment: The cellar in our basement is an absolute disaster. No one is allowed to go in there.

021909carla23.jpg

Proudest DIY: Almost all of the framed art is found or handmade. Very few pieces were purchased. We also furnished the whole house on a relatively small budget.

Best Advice: Make use of hand-me-down furniture from parents and grandparents. We also bought a lot of furniture at a big warehouse that carries only overstocked and discontinued furniture from multiple vendors.

Found Treasure: Jack stole the modern floor lamp in our living room from his office.

My Indulgence: OWLS!

Dream Source: Furniture from Anthropologie. It's just too expensive.

Had forever: Antique trunk.

Just got: Throw pillow in master bedroom.

Furniture: Macys, Antique Shops, Urban Outfitters, Scratch 'n Dent Furniture, Crate and Barrel, Garage Sales.............Ikea.

Looks great! What paint color was used in the living room/dining room? I love it.

The outside doesn't match the beauty of the inside and needs some attention. I know it's the winter, but it looks bare, a couple of urns with greenery, and the front porch should be tiled/painted. it just looks like a plain old house otherwise.

oops! sorry, I see they've only been there 3 months!
I'm sure come the spring they'll finish the outside.
my apologies.

Its very fresh and nice paint palette makes it s soothing space and warm. I love the coconut bed, good choice.

It seems the art is hung too high in the living room and dining room.

Otherwise Congrats you you new home.

I love this house! All of the paint colors are great and everything seems so fresh and organized.

I have a couple of source questions. Where did you get the black circle throw pillow on the bed (the one with the framed pictures around it)? Also, I was wondering if the octopus print is handmade or did you buy it somewhere?

Congratulations on having your home so complete in three months! I am still unpacking six months later.

I love how they kept the personal photos in the guest room from looking hodge-podge and messy. I knew grayscaling or sepia-toning would give it that consistent, elevated look, but taking it one step further to line them up so consistently almost turns it into fine art!

You have some nice peices, but overall it feels very empty and unlived in. That being sad- it looks good for only being there 3 months. I'm sure you'll warm the place up as time goes on.

Agree with mariah - the bedroom lamps should be bigger, although the shade colour is fabulous. The office paint colour is gorgeous, as is the guest room. The whole thing just calming and clean and beautifully spare. I'm jealous!

n2denim...maybe just accept that having a "keep calm, carry on" poster means something diffferent to everyone and move on? there are tons of people out there that still have never seen it. I relate to it because of the horrible economy, like most..but gave it to a friend going through chemo after her second bout with breast cancer, losing her hair, sick, tired...each person interprets it differently and if looking at it in your home is a positive statement that YOU need - then go with it! in fact, i think i'll plaster a whole wall with them this weekend :)

I'm curious if you knew you were getting this particular house before you started buying pieces for it? But OTOH, if you only buy things you love, isn't that going to be somewhat consistent regardless of your dwelling?

I thought the AT rule of thumb was to wait till you were in your new space before buying so you'd have a better feel for what would 'work', and that's what I keep telling myself to resist the temptation to "pre-nest" for our next home.

This house tour might just ruin what little resolve I had to wait till we had a house locked in before I start to acquire things to fill it...

I like it a lot. I would like to live in this house. But I'm suddenly depressed that we as a culture have made such a fetish of "organization" and it's accouterments that we're now ogling pictures of wicker mail sorters (or ceramic pencil holders, or pasteboard magazine caddies, etc...).

I'm pretty sure my mom had a wicker mail sorter on the counter of the harvest gold kitchen in her starter home, but it would never have occurred to her, as tour guide, to seek approbation for so prosaic a convenience.

Which isn't to say that I have a problem with wicker mail sorters specifically, or with organization in general, or with this particular slideshow tour of this lovely home.

But I would like to state for the record that I think we can appreciate the overall effects of these de-cluttering devices without focusing on them so explicitly. Our homes are not Container Store salesfloors.

Thanks for the comments and feedback!

Answers:
living room paint = Benjamin Moore Pismo Dunes
kitchen and bathroom paint = Hirshfields Charcoal Slate
office paint = Hirshfields Navy Blue
master bedroom paint = Hirshfields London Fog

Dining Room Table = Scratch 'n Dent furniture in MN... you probably won't be able to find another one, it was a discontinued piece :(

Black Circle pillow = Urban Outfitters (but a couple yrs old)

Octopus Art = Saw something similar on a website or magazine and made our own version...

Wicker Paper Organizer = Ikea!

SeattleMama - We actually did know that this was the house we were moving into... so being able to visualize the space allowed us to buy some pieces in advance...

And yes, yes, yes - we can't wait to work on the outside come spring! :)

Thanks for clarifying! From the wording in the post, I wasn't sure if you'd seen the space before you started acquiring things for your new home. But if you knew where you were going, that explains why things look so put together.

Darn it, though- I thought I finally had justification for my little horde of things for our next place! Now I need a new excuse to be perusing the listings on Craigslist...

This does look nice, but feels bare in certain spots. It has the feeling of a hotel in a few areas (the dining area, around the sofa, and under the television). I love the storage area though, esp. the red pig and storage boxes adding in color.

Some parts seem too perfect and as if they'd be more interesting with a little imperfection.

n2denim and christie--

If you don't like the "keep calm", don't look at it.

Although I have one, I get that you are sick of it. And even though it's a nice message, maybe people should stop featuring it in their house tours like it something highly original--cause it's not.

posted by 1stnest on February 20th 2009 at 8:20am
view 1stnest's profile

I don't think they feature it because they're under the impression that it is unique in anyway, but more because it is a part of their home. Perhaps, along with other things they've chosen to show in the tour, means something to them on a personal level.

Or maybe it's simply a tongue and cheek comment on everyone elses house tour that so prominently displays the piece. Who knows?

But you're absolutely right 1stnest, to the people who don't like it, just keep calm and carry on.

It does have meaning to many in these crazy, bad, scary days.
Thanks for reminding me that it is an awesome saying that only the Brits could have come up with and one that I really must try to focus on right now!
Thank you.......and besides, it looks great (color and composition wise) in this house!

Bed Model: Coconut Bed from CB2

Danish chair in living room is from Urban Outfitters. It was delivered unassembled but is actually comfortable and sturdy. It has an all wood frame.

White table lamp: Again, Urban Outfitters... they may still carry it.

White shower curtain: Anthropologie

The perfect vibe for the moment - peaceful and content with what is. (And cast another vote in favor of KCACO posters - they are elegant and the message is timely).

I like the non-Mc-Mansion size and style - and the paint colors etc. show real design savvy, in fact, much more than 95% of what you seen in interiors magazines. The factor I am most tired of, which I call "Trying Too Hard" is quite blissfully missing from this home - AMEN, and thanks!

PS - I hope y'all are not wasting yourselves in non-artistic jobs…

Hi Neighbor,
I live 1/2 the year in St Louis Park MN - summer by Westwood Hills , the other half in NYC. As a new transplant, I have researched SLP architecture. FYI you have 1 of 4 styles of house that were built in the late 40's to Mid 50's. These were constructed for the returning WWII veterans returning from war. They encouraged the veterans to leave North Minneapolis to move to the burbs! Your house dates to about 1948. My father in-law had the same one. The SLP dept of buildings came out with a book in the 1980's on how to modify nd dd on to these 4 styles of homes. I have a copy in MN, and live in the rambler style.. built in 1955. You could probably see it by asking the building dept.
What people don't know is that SLP has great schools and low taxes, and was rated one of the best places to live in America - MN in general!! My sister who works for the Board of Ed in NJ often sees SLP schools mentioned as a model of good education, eventhough she is in NJ.
so enjoy this little bit of history.

I love the simplicity of the design and the earthy, tranquil colors. I also love the idea that if you wanted to add color, you could easily do so in the art and accessories without losing the overall effect.

I often see homes that have great color and lots of interesting things to look at, but feel it would not be restful to live with so much going on (and to have to dust, clean, arrange). THIS design is one I could live with in a heartbeat.

I had a similar home in the Denver suburbs that had been built in 1953 (for vets from WWII). I kept it simple (as you have), painted the exterior taupe with white trim and black shutters, painted the interior mostly white, including the not so special wood and paneling (I had three small kids so it made it easy to clean/touch up paint) and was as happy as a clam to be in an established neighborhood with mature planting, excellent schools and great neighbors. Best wishes to you in your home!
