For those who have never been to the Central Midwest, it has a feel and way of life all to its own. We drive our own cars (as opposed to mass transportation), we raise our own livestock and we love to do things ourselves. And while Steve and Cathy Worden, from a suburb of Kansas City, don't have any cows or chickens out back, they do have a great working knowledge of what it takes to put a home together with your own two hands. From planning to budgeting and construction, they did it all. Come take a look at what some some old fashioned determination and perseverance can do!

100208-hometourthumbs.jpg

100208-hometour1.jpg

Steve and Cathy Worden started planning their house project back in 2001. They broke ground in 2002 and after 22 months they had completed enough of the home to move in. The couple did 80% of the work themselves, spending weekends at the property, working tirelessly into the night. The homeowners worked within a very limited budget and in efforts to save money, they purchased highly industrial items to help keep the costs down. Most of the materials they used are available to everyone as they were purchased right off the shelves.

Steve says, "Many of us need to be inspired by design and that’s how I got started. So, maybe our home can inspire someone to do it as well." Their house is studded with artwork from Robert McDonald Graham Jr. (studied under Thomas Hart Benton and Cathy's great uncle), mid-century Furniture and much more.
Building your own home isn't out of the question, and with adequate planning and preparation, it's even obtainable with day jobs, kids and cats!

Don't be afraid to ask the Wordens a question or two about the build, they are more than willing to answer any questions you might have. Just leave them a comment after the survey below!

AT Survey:

Our Style: Mid-Century Architecture & Design

Inspiration: Frank Lloyd Wright, Finn Juhl, Hans Wegner, Sam Maloof, BCJ- Bohlin Cywinski Jackson Architects

Favorite Element: The view of the exterior at night is amazing….it just glows.

Favorite Room:
Steve - STUDIO. Getting away to be creative in a space that is lit by a Polygal clerestory, filled with Festool power tools, and full of 4/4 sycamore & walnut is a dream come true.
Cathy - Kitchen

Biggest Challenge: Taking time with the interior design and not making predictable decisions.

What Friends Say: Party at Steve’s!

Biggest Embarrassment: Dirty Windows

Proudest DIY: Out of necessity we built 75% of the home ourselves and we wanted to use as many industrial materials as possible, purchased right off the shelf and available to anyone. The key is using those materials in creative ways.

Best Advice: Buy a fixer and keep your day job.

Found Treasure: It’s actually a book I found on the web a couple of years ago. 1st Edition - California Modern Houses - Esther McCoy- $20 /Mint Condition

My Indulgence: There were many along the way, but the one that hurt the most was a custom shower full of Grohe - Atrio fixtures at the end of the project.

Dream Source: LAMA - Los Angeles Modern Auctions - Shannon is your GO TO!

Reality Source: Home depot, Ebay, and Internet

Had forever: GRIT!!!!

Just got: Jens Risom teak arm chair - Knoll

This is a beautiful house! I especially love the drywall build-outs over the block - great details! The kitchen cabinets are also fantastic!

"We drive our own cars ... "

Whose cars do you think every other reader on this site drives?

Do you think everyone here has a driver?

And "it's own" should be "its own"

Okay, and "The Worden's" should be "The Wordens'" (in more than one instance). In fact, most apostrophes in this entry are either incorrectly placed or incorrectly missing.

On the other hand, this is a lovely tour.

Indy Jeffrey, I started feeling stressed and tense just READING your comment. Take a lavender-infused bath or go find a puppy to kiss - just petting an animal can lower your heart rate and blood pressure. Whew!

I'm 85% sure that I'm about to buy a foreclosure/investment property that's a total wreck, needing to be completely gutted, so I'm STOKED to see some DIY building action! Love the ceilings, the brick on the walls, the industrial fixtures, the furniture...is that concrete flooring in the kitchen/dining area? I'm .97423 seconds away from drooling on the keyboard here. The bathroom sinks/vanities are RAD. Is it basically just a credenza/whatever with a different top and sink installed? The only hangup is if that is carpeting I spy in the bedrooms. If it is, I might cry. I'm vehemently opposed to carpet of any kind. Blame the 3 dogs. (PS. I'm in Texas and hear "den" regularly)

I think they're a lot of frustreted copy editors out their. Or maybe just too many good writers who doesn't need editing.

I really like the house.

Ditto on the drywall with exposed block. I see little tricks like that as making something out of nothing. Same with the skylight on the patio. You're not adding anything extra just manipulating the essential materials. I'm constantly trying to learn things like that.

I kept thinking "honey" when looking at the kitchen. Then I read, "fit for a queen" and I thought "queen bee" which really drove home the honey thought.

It's a really great modern house with lots of character and warmth.

What was the purpose of the one course of 4" block? You can see it two photos up.

I completely adore this house! WOW!

What is the insulation rating on the concrete block? Is there additional insulation?

Also, what was the final cost per sf, excluding land & furnishings of course.

The kitchen is absolutely adorable. This kitchen looks like it would be a good layout for a rowhouse.

I totally agree with thekatieway about the foreclosures. I've been spying a few 3 story basement (2700 sq. ft) with the cheapest one starting under 100k! Don't worry the entire 2700 wouldn't all be for me, I'll rent out one of the floors out to a friend (or other worthy tenant).

Very unique and "outside the box" design for the burbs. The Worden's have made a very cool statement with a nice mix of materials to acheive a warm feeling but still keeping edginess with the exposed CMU. Great house, looking forward to future endeavours!

I love the wood color on the kitchen cabs. Very nice. The selection of bright accent colors really brings out warmth inside instead of the sterileness I've seen in some modern homes. How are the cement walls for heating and AC costs?

Wow this home is beautiful! Hard to believe this home is in Kansas it looks like something from the coast.
My wife and I are in agreement that the home is a great fusion of what is wanted by both men and women in a home.
Great Job!

I am so surprised everyone loves this so much. To me, it feels like the pictures were taken before anyone actually moved in... where is the evidence of human habitation? It is nice to look at I suppose, but only like a magazine shoot is... I like a home to show some of the character of the people who live there, and this one just doesn't do that.

Usually houses in this style seem antiseptic, but for some reason, the effect here is organic and warm. I have hated plastic for a long time, but this place reminds me that even plastic can be natural. It's a very striking effect.

I feel the same way about another recent post: a Wisconsin farmhouse with a curved roof.

I love the house. My question regards the flooring. In my country people don't use architectural concrete for flooring at homes but I like it a lot. Is there any way to cast them myself? And how to avoid cracking?

Beautiful modern home. Love the high ceilings, the furnishings, and the mix of modern with mid-century. The home has a very warm feel to it. The attention to the little details is also great.

The picture of the outside of the house and garage all lit up is amazing. I love the use of polygal that trims the top of the garage.

Love the tour....

I will be launching a website, for my studio in the next week or so…… www.archetype3.com

Thanks and enjoy!

thekatieway
Q. - The bathroom sinks/vanities?
A. - We designed the pieces ourselves and were influenced by mid century credenzas from George Nelson and Florence Knoll.

Art
Q. - What was the purpose of the one course of 4" block?
A. - By adding one course of 4” block we were able to create a nice visual break.

nicolemarie
Q. - What is the insulation rating on the concrete block? Is there additional insulation?
A. - We used a light weight block because it had a higher R-value and we filled the cores with a granular Perlite insulation…that gets you to about R-11. On the interior we insulated the furred walls with R-13 as well. There are so many little things to take into account….taking advantage of passive solar heat gain, radiant heated floors, windows, 2nd story construction, roof, etc….We figure the entire envelope averages around R-19.

UdoMin
Q. - Patrick Dempsey?
A. - The wife is looking at me with a little differently lately….Thanks!

Georgiana
Q. - How are the cement walls for heating and AC costs?
A. - Very good. In the summer it is very cool…costs are much lower that a traditional home and in the winter we have yet to turn on the radiant heating system that was installed up front…..All in all the home is incredibly efficient.

Lizzykewl
Q. - Adorable little one as well!
A. - Thank you

hannahgi
Q. - Is there any way to cast them myself? And how to avoid cracking?
A. - In the US concrete can be mixed at a plant and delivered to the site. You can specify the strength as well…like 5000 PSI.

Easyenough
Q. - Gorgeous build. I'm redoing my apartment, and I'm replacing a fireplace with a wood stove - I love yours - what is it? It looks like one of the Danish stoves imported by Wittus - maybe the trendline?
A. - We chose SCAN from a local supplier…the installed cost was around $2200.
