It's no secret that we love Soho-based fabric blog, the Purl Bee. Each of their how-to projects involves very detailed, beautifully photographed step-by-step instructions. Projects range from quick and easy (how to sew on a button, how to make a pincushion) to advanced undertakings (quilts, dresses, handbags). We definitely fall within the beginner group, so we're drawn to their simpler tutorials, 8 of which we've rounded up below...

I love how people are making an affort to make things, take pride or even buy handmade.

It is so hard to find pin cushions that are cute... I love, love, LOVE these little guys! I once had a woman's bust pin cushion and the bust even had a tutu... I miss my wonderful, fancy pin cushion! Where have you gone wonderful, fancy pin cushion? I feel I need to go to Joan's Fabrics now...

SO cute!!! My 7 year old has been wanting to sew and crochet, so the timing is perfect. Thanks!
I could see the pin cushion being a sweet present she could make her teachers or the legion of great aunts.

I'm still ab beginner at sewing, but I love Purl Bee. I did several napkins with their help an the instruction was sooo good. The pictures and the descriptions are very easy to follow and the tone is allways supportative.

I just made napkins from an old pillowcase from those directions. They don't look nearly as nice as those in the picture (because, you know, I can't sew straight even with a sewing machine), but they are just for me to wipe my dirty hands on, so who cares. Yay!
