Basket Case Study

ReadyMade 09/10.2007

While we love looking through ReadyMade magazine and are always inspired by the projects, more often that not we’re left thinking, "I’ll never be able to make that." You see, we’re not that handy; it’s our lot in life. Still, looking at Paul Schifino’s lovely modernist bowl, we feel there’s hope for us yet!

Inspired by a bowl made from melted toy soldiers in a previous issue of ReadyMade, Schifino constructed the bowl using orange construction netting. With repurposing so much in vogue, after we make the Basket Case Study bowl, we’ll certainly be stylin’.

To make the bowl, Schifino cut two 19” circles out of the netting and placed them over a wok lid which was being used as a template. Setting his oven at 400°, he placed the netting over the lid on the bottom rack and watched it bend and melt a la Shrinky Dink. The results are a gorgeous bowl that looks so much more expensive that what it is. We approve!

That is very cool!

(though I'd worry a bit about toxic fumes when making it)

I tried this a few months ago and it SORT of worked... but it's true, it gave off horrible chemical burning plastic death fumes.

I just want to know...where would one procure orange construction netting...especially if you are not in the construction business?

Hi Suzy8track -

You can buy a roll at Utility Safeguard

Why? There aren't enough bowls or baskets around? Who buys a roll of construction netting to melt in their home oven?

It looks cool, but yeah, instead of buying a nonrenewable material and melting more of it into the atmosphere, why not go buy one of the 238974983 nifty bowls that are sitting at a thrift store not being used?

Also, isn't the point of repurposing to save something from being thrown away? I suppose if you did in fact find the construction netting being discarded, then I could get behind the idea of releasing a few fumes (which is less destructive than buying a brand-new bowl, probably). But it sounds like people are buying new construction netting and melting it. Not exactly repurposing.

Hi eeka,

The original artist did salvage the netting. I don't think I'd buy an entire roll of netting, but if I happened to find some at a construction site, I'd definitely snag it. ;)
