After a weekend of record rains in the Midwest, we're welcoming drier forecasts this week. Storms moving northward from Hurricane Ike have left many people in Chicago and the surrounding area with flooded homes. (Mies van der Rohe's Farnsworth House was one of the victims of the heavy rains.) Today's Chicago Tribune offers some tips for cleaning up safely after the flooding...
A few of their tips:
• Check for any structural damage before cleaning.
• Don't use matches or open flames in case of a gas leak.
• Keep power off until water is removed and an electrician gives the go-ahead.
• Discard any water-submerged food, upholstered furniture, or drywall.
• Wear sturdy rubber boots and gloves while cleaning.
• Disinfect with 1 cup of bleach diluted in 5 gallons of water.

• Slowly pump water out of flooded basements, removing 1/3 of water per day to avoid pressure collapse.

Please Please Please donate to the farnsworth house. It is a great example of MCM design and it is just incredible. Please look at the pictures on their website. If you have ever had your won house flood, then you could understand how those people feel about the house that one of the most incredible architects has ever built, especially at the peak of his career. It can be a small donation, but it would help. The photos made me sick. It is sad because it was already so close to disappearing, and now it could be gone for good...
