How To: Get This Look At Home

072808-anthro.jpg There are several stores that always have rather inspiring window displays. We all know which ones they are, and this one from Anthropologie was no exception. Never being afraid to roll up our sleeves and get a little dirty, we think this could be a great on-a-budget design idea. Click through the jump to see how.

072808-anthro2.jpg It doesn't matter if you take white glue and thin it out with a bit of water, or mix up your own batch of homemade paste from starch and water, simple paper strips stuck over a ballon (think elementary school pinatas) will give you the basic shape for this project. It's a great way to use up old junk mail or things that are typically found in your paper recycling bin.
After making several and allowing them to cure for a full 24 hours, take a pin or needle and pop the balloon inside. Using the hole created as a starting point, simply cut out a larger circle. Paint the insides (and outsides if you choose) of your new spherical cubbies and let the fun begin.
You could use these in a grouping like they are seen here (thin wire found at the hardware store would work well to hang them with). Used in mass quantity they would take up a large space that would otherwise cost mega $$ to decorate.
They could also be used as cell phone holders on landing strips, if used individually, or on your desk at work to hold paper clips and rubber bands.

Let your imagination run free and don't be afraid to think outside the box. Remember, when making a project of this manner, there is no wrong way to do it!

I may love art, but I don't love this look! It looks like eyeballs or bunch of oversized, white olives stacked up in a window.

I saw these a couple weeks ago and thought they looked pretty cool - all these white spheres with colors inside. My 2 yr old son saw these and was completely fascinated - so I told him we could make some... well I made one and it turned out very cool - I plan on making some more and we'll hang them somewhere! Ours has a slightly larger hole so you can see more of the color. I did two layers of colored tissue (actually used the tissue that anthro wrapped my dress in) and 2 layers of paper towels. Took over 24 hours to dry though.

it looks like a project to do with your 5-years-old. And then toss it.

not fond of it at all-----if they were hand blown glass and had lights in them I might buy into it for a really modern home----but who could afford such a thing!

I like 'em because they remind me of eyeballs.

Not pleasant. They look like insect casings, and they don't seem to have any function.

color inside and white outside does make them look like eye balls. and I am no fan of white. though you could easily color the outside to make them look more like fruit or something. add some led's and you could have a grape bunch light. or an apple tree light if hung from branches. I think I have a project to do now.

anthropologie normally has really excellent window displays, so it's funny to feature this one that is so horrible.

What do you want to spend time making these for? It just seems the capacity for filling in the boredom gets more and more bizarre and juvenile. If it comes down to this, then you know it's time to do something with your life!

amt230: I totally agree! I used to take the #36 bus into work every day and made sure to oogle their window display, but this? This is bad.

Totally uninspired, ungraceful, not whimsical, dull, down right hit with an ugly stick!

Poor taste well it speaks for itself, yet poor judgment is an insult to your readers.

Wait, AT is recommending we MAKE these? Really??

Why, oh why, oh why?

(And I second KTG's comment about GETTING A LIFE!)

I like it--sounds like a fun project--it reminds me of barnacles or a Louise Bourgeois sculpture.
