How To: Improve Your Indoor Air Quality in Winter

1-7-09window.jpg

One of the best ways to improve your indoor air quality is the simplest: open the windows. But what if it's 2 degrees outside? National Geographic's Green Guide has some tips for getting rid of the pollutants that pile up indoors during the winter (without catching a cold in the process)...

According to NG, the best way to clear the air is to clean regularly with green cleaners. For step-by-step tips on cleaning to minimize airborne pollutants and allergens, see this post. Other suggestions from NG are ones we've blogged before: use a HEPA vacuum, don't wear shoes in the house, run ventilation fans, and use an air filter indoors. I would hope removing shoes would be standard if it's two degrees and probably snowy or icy.

And bring in potted plants for the winter... they'll do a little to improve the air, too.

With allergies and an air purifier, I still suffer from the effects of wall to wall (apt.) and the past in air ducts, etc.
Does anyone have a Himalayan salt lamp and what do you think of it? The ones I have seen claim to clean the air.
