How To: Make a Floating Headboard

20080219headframe1.jpgHere's an easy DIY headboard that's guaranteed to add romance and drama to your bedroom. The supplies are few, the labor should only take an afternoon, and the end result is a little bit of magic.

Step-by-step after the jump.

Supplies:

  • Curtain rod (with hardware)
  • Picture Hanging wire
  • Curtain Panel(s)
  • Beautiful picture frame

  • Step 1: Choose your material. The width of the curtain panels (or single panel) should measure out to at least one and a half times the width of your bed. This ensures they won't be too taut to allow soft folds in the fabric. The height of the curtain is up to you but full ceiling-to-floor length panels will up the drama factor.

Step 2: Mount the curtain rod as close to the ceiling as possible. Again, for added elegance, attach the rod directly to the ceiling. Hang the curtains and step back to make sure everything is at the right height and centered.

Step 3: Now use the wire to hang the empty picture frame from the same curtain rod. If the frame is exceptionally heavy, you could attach it to the ceiling with set of eye hooks or anchors. The nearly-invisible wire will fade back into the curtains and the frame will appear to float above your bed.

Aside from looking nice in a photo, this really doesn't have any of the functionality of a headboard. A bare wall would work better, in my opinion.

A picture frame suspended from wire.... away from the wall..... free to sway in the breeze, or if bumped in the middle of the night.

Doesn't seem like such a great idea to me.

You could probably actually mount the frame to the wall, where the curtains meet, and then you'd have the wall functionality. of course, it wouldn't be "floating" then, but you'd have a similar look.

I would be afraid of a) bumping my head on the frame or b) ripping/ pulling down the curtain if you leaned against it with your pillows.

    Thumbs down from me.

I want that painting. Does anyone have ideas where I could find something similar?

yeah, i'd attach the frame directly to the wall (you could just snip a little hole in the curtain). also, i didnt realize that it was just an empty frame, which i think looks kinda silly. it reminds me of a display at Bed Bath and Beyond ...i think an antiqued mirror would look much better.

Pretty in a picture but looks like it might be an accident waiting to happen in an earthquake.
