Some have been lucky to find a fabulous sideboard or credenza from a sale or off Craigslist, but for those who have come up empty handed, no despair, just make on yourself. This Old House walks us through a relatively simple process using stock cabinets (which can be found for super cheap at your local Re-Store).
This Old House is always supportive of doing things yourself, and why not when they can look as fabulous as this? For those looking to make something slightly more modern, choose a cabinet with flat fronts and appropriate hardware. Check your local Re-Store for cabinets and trim for literally just a few dollars. This Old House says this is what you'll need to get started:
• One sheet of ½-inch cabinet-grade birch plywood
• Three 18-inch base cabinets
• ½x1 lattice strips
• ¾ bed molding
• 1x3 furring strips
• ½x2 lattice strips
• Three push door latches
• Six knobs
• Four furniture feet
• Four corner foot plates

Choose a cabinet - Not Chose (past-tense)
It appears to be a nice project - I hope someone here does it and sends in their results!

I have been looking all over for a sideboard to go in my breakfast room. This is a really timely post for me. Wish me luck!

Clever. Too bad the cabinets we're about to rip out and replace are 35-year-old particle board. Not that we really have room for a sideboard anyway!

This is such a great idea!

I really like this..... Our modem and wireless router are in the dining room so I have been looking for a cabinet that can both be used as a sideboard and hold the hardware. I found one at IKEA but I really, really didn't want to go IKEA. I also have found some really lovely antiques on CL but I don't have the heart to cut a whole in one to put the cords through. This would be the perfect solution! I don't have to destroy an antique or go generic with IKEA... woo hoo.

I saw something like this in a how-to ideas guide from Lowe's once. But they used one smaller cabinet (like an 18-inch) and then one double-door. In between, they put a small under-cabinet fridge and attached a "counter" across the top (basically just a piece of plywood painted). I always wanted to do it as a bar area. Take the doors off, paint the interior a different color and put glasses and liquor in there. Keep the beers and soda in the fridge. Maybe I will get the courage to take it on after seeing this...

After searching and searching the kitchen cabinet idea for a credenza.....I finally gave in and went to a cabinet maker and had cabinets made to my size specs. I am borrowing from the design of mid century modern, so I have put it on round tapered legs, and will be adding the sliding doors this weekend. I am in love with it.
For me, I found top cabinets to narrow in depth at 12", and bottom cabinets too deep @ 18 or 24...plus the added expense of a top.
Either way...it is a wonderful idea and even having cabinets made, it is much less expensive than buying a piece.

Now I can quit scouring CraigsList because the few I like are antiques (yet simple in design) and cost more than I can afford. The rest are just junk.
What a great idea.
