How To: Stock Your Home for the Chaotic Holidays

11-27-08pantry.jpg

As much as we love having holiday parties and overnight guests, we've learned from experience to stock up on Advil beforehand. December is a chaotic month for many people, so we've compiled a list of basic supplies to get you ready you for the onslaught. We're not advocating a bunker mentality (no need to buy that 80-pack of toilet paper from Costco), but we do think it helps to be prepared...

  • Linens: If you've got guests coming, make sure you have enough sheets, blankets, towels, and table linens.
  • Cleaning Supplies: Any time you have a bunch of people over, spills are bound to happen and you're probably going to have loads of dirty dishes. Keep enough cleaning supplies on hand to combat the mess.
  • Advil, Alka Seltzer, Pepto Bismol: Whatever you use to alleviate the pain the holidays inflict on your poor body, make sure you have some on hand.
  • Toilet Paper: It's never a good thing to run out of toilet paper, but especially not when you have guests over.
  • Plain Dishes: If you're clumsy like us, then you'll need to stock your cupboard to make up for all the plates and glasses you broke while washing dishes over the last year.
  • Home Movies: Stock up on rentals, cue up your Netflix, or get the Pay-Per-View ready for those times when you and your family just need to zone out.
  • Music: Start working on your party playlists for the season.
  • Trash and Recycling Bags: Unfortunately, the holidays create a lot of waste, so make sure your recycling containers and trash bags are ready to go.
  • Extra Gifts: Keep a couple of extra small gifts in the closet in case you've forgotten someone.
  • Anything we've missed? Let us know your holiday supply list in the comments below.

I would add hors d'oeuvres you can put out with little effort but store well (cheese/crackers, olives/prosciutto/french bread/parmesan, frozen appetizers, etc.) and a few bottles of wine.

extra light bulbs; enough dishwasher soap; bar mops for keeping the counters clean without using paper towels; soap & toiletries kits, including toothbrushes, for guest bath (Martha idea: pocket in a folded handtowel); shoe trays or mudroom mats. extra umbrellas. bandaids.

I always buy a small Hickory Farms gift pack (sometimes more). It serves three purposes.

    1. Emergency appetizer

    2. Emergency gift

    3. Awesome post-Christmas snack if not needed for #1 or #2

For music, I just depend on our satellite TV service -- we have DISH, so we get Sirius channels, plus a few exclusive to DISH. I had drinks with a friend last week at his house, and he had DIRECT's XM service playing in the background.

Everything on the list is great. My bf is the coffeehound from hell, and if we run out of half & half or, God forbid, coffee, he loses his cookies.

ditto the "store well" appetizer recommendation: crackers, anything that might fit on a relish tray (pickles, olives, etc.), frozen appetizers. World Market is a great source for pickled items.
