How To: Tony's Salvaged Wood Coat Rack

Wowza - a gorgeous (and green!) reader project arrived in our inbox this morning. Tony sent us photos of this coat rack/picture rail project made from salvaged wood and old doorknobs. Jump below for the details and more photos:

Tony tells us:

I made a pair of picture rails from salvaged wood and metal studs: Mounted the wood beam flush to the brick, folded and pinned the stud ends into a box form for structure and then screwed the studs open side up onto the top side of the beam.

Dropped some old door knobs underneath as a bag/coat/hat/helmet rack.

Total cost for both racks, excluding the vintage doorknobs, was $17.

If you don't have access to old doorknobs try the Readymade suggestion of using round garden faucet handles from your hardware store.

Result: less stuff on the floor, more room for the dog.

It looks fantastic and super practical - it's always great to see a project for the entry area. Thanks for sending, Tony!

wow what a great idea... now this is the definition of 'green' to me. Reuse - the good old fashioned way of designing. I love it.

What makes this really nice is the beautiful brick wall and the framed photos. I don't think it would be as impressive on my boring, standard white apartment walls.

Question: How did you attach the wood to the brick (i.e. what type of screws/any prep work necessary?)

Tony, this is just brilliant!

We have an outdoor shop,CornerstoneOutdoors.com, which sells helmets and other gear for outdoor sport and work rescue. Then on the other side, we have a cheesecake and gift shop. Many of the displays / furniture on the cheesecake side are 'green'. It would be wonderful to combine the two like you did here!
