25 Looks From The Fabulous Auntie Mame

Last month we were laid up with the flu and had some time to catch up a backlog of movies. At the top of the list was one of the greats we grew up with (and a great "camped out sick on the couch" flick)...the beloved Auntie Mame. See the evolution of Mame's home through the years and share your favorite after the jump!

Watching Auntie Mame is like being a kid in a candy store. Each new set redesign brings fabulous new finds and great lessons in symmetry and color. From molded architectural details to sofas that raise at the pull of a rope, each new room will have you hitting pause to examine it more closely.

one of THE BEST movies ever made! no one else played Auntie Mame as well as Rosalynd Russell.

My personal style coincides with this movie. I think I've even mentioned it on this site before!

Oh, what fun!

My least favorite sets are her frilly Austrian-shaded & seashell upholstered late-20's bedroom, the Marie Antoinette guestroom, and the early-1950's gilded Indian decor from the end of the film.

My favorites are the opulent James Mont-esqe Chinese Deco from the opening scenes in the 20's, the late 20's Pastel American Deco, the grand 1930's Chippendale Regency from Mame's widowhood, and the hastily-installed 1940's Danish Avant-Garde hydraulic sofas and hanging goldfish bowls by Yule Oolu.

The books (including the sequel and the biography of the author) are spectacular! I recommend those, too!

(they may even be better than the movie.)

i love mame's spirit. how fully into something she gets, no matter what it is. she's a curious spirit, life is too stimulating to her. i'm not sure if it's ever stated but i tend to believe she's the younger sibling. that's what makes mame's interiors special, that they are extensions of what she's about at the time. she doesn't live in her head, it's all on display to share with others. she doesn't just want to be a free spirit, mame wants to free others as well.

My absolute all-time favorite, once-a-year don't-budge-from-the-couch treat. Even my husband enjoys it. Timeless, stylish, heart-warming and smart. I strive to be more free-spirited like Mame. WWMD?

It's amazing to me that so many people do not know this movie. I made my book club read the book - they ALL fell in love with Mame and quickly went out to rent the movie!

I hope to be as fun as Autie Mame to my nieces and nephews!

Auntie Mame is the only DVD I own. It was given to me by my friend and her son to whom I am his own personal Auntie Mame.
